"My expectation in the near future is to start a boutique business. I am currently running second-hand clothes selling business in open markets. This comes with its own share of challenges such as heavy rain and scorching sun. Now that I have learned the art of this business, I would love to have one successful boutique. The return from this investment will enable me take better care of my family and meet all the daily needs. Having a stable business will help me grow financially and lead to an improved lifestyle."

"I have no formal job thus I engage in mixed farming to be able to sustain my family. I have been a poultry farmer for long and I have loved this farming because of its daily eggs production. I have been able to sell eggs to get money to meet other household needs and petty emergencies that arise in day to day life. Even though the risk of predators was a challenge, the biggest challenge I had with poultry farming was the frequent cause of conflicts in my neighbors since they could crossover and destroy their crops. It had always been my wish to keep them in a better structure for easy control but this was not possible to be due to limited resources. The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to achieve my dream of building a better structure to keep my poultry. I am happy that I have peace of mind, live in harmony with my neighbors, and my chickens are safe from predators. I also have easy control of my chickens thus none still complains that my chickens have destroyed their crops in their farms."

Emmanuel
received a $529 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is the high self-esteem in society and happiness that my improved farming I did has brought to my daily life. I feel empowered since I currently own a dairy cow that I did have before. It had been a challenge to buy milk each day given that I had other family needs to take care of. I am happy that currently, I can also produce milk for my household consumption and sales. I no longer spend on milk, instead, I save what could have been used in milk and at times add to what I earn from milk sales to cater to other family needs. Also, I believe that very soon, my wife will start earning an income from the poultry project I started for her. She will be using this money to support me in paying for our bills. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for financial support."

Paul
received a $512 second payment.
"My life is different than it would have been if I never received this transfers in that I have been able to start a poultry keeping project. This has enabled me to live a stress-free life because I can easily meet our daily needs without much struggle as I make 300 KES per day from selling eggs. Before, I used to rely on masonry works which would fluctuate and I had to stay two to three weeks with work. This was frustrating since I left alot of the household responsibility for my wife. Now, I am able to support my spouse in meeting our daily needs. We have divided some of our household expenses, for instance, I use my income on paying school fees for our children."
