"My morning was brightened by the transfer notification I received from GiveDirectly. I could not believe at first that I had KES 55000 on my phone. I took us time before we could finally sit down with my husband and plan how we could invest these transfers. We finally settled on buying livestock. The livestock will give birth and by the time our children will have grown and started school we will be selling the young ones. This will help us in financing our children's education."

"Having started a business for my daughter has made my life to be totally different. This is because previously, she was employed by one of her friends and she was getting a very low salary. She was paid on commission from the little money they could receive in a day. Since she was our breadwinner life was so tough because we were depending on her in everything. Sometimes her siblings could be sent home to collect school fees and they could stay for weeks and starve as well. But the coming of GD had transformed everything since saloon business id is now doing okay, we no longer suffer because my daughter provides everything in the family from the profit she is earning. We no longer starve as we used to. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly."

"Lack of alternative sources of income has been the biggest hardship in life. At the moment, we survive on casual jobs and charcoal burning businesses which in most instances cannot generate enough income to adequately sustain the family's needs. Since we buy everything from food to water, it is very constraining and as a result, we have compromised on other important things like education and better health care for our children. Most of them have schooled lowly due to a lack of fees. Even the house that we live in, - it is very tiny and cannot accommodate all of us comfortably. Therefore, these transfers will be a big relief for the family."

"Having my own retail shop has made my life to be so different. As a businesswoman, I have been longing to own it for a long period of time but I could not afford to construct one. I have been selling the products from door to door which was so tiresome and expensive as well because I used to hire someone to help me. Secondly, during winter seasons I was not able to move from place to place to sell them, during these seasons it was a loss to me. And it was really affecting me in so many ways because some of my family's baic needs I couldn't meet them. It is now a relief to me because I am hopeful and ambitious since I have my own permanent retail shop whereby I will be selling anything in any given period."

"I am a single mother of 8 and it is very tough for me raising up my children. With the casual jobs I do ,it is only enough to buy food while other needs like clothes, school fees and medication becomes a problem. When I work half day as a casual labourer in people's farms,I am usually paid Ksh 100.Talking of school fees,my children have been in and out of school due to arrears. This has really affected their education.I currently have a child in secondary school and another in college. For my son to join college it took the assistance of a village group(which I am a member) to pool resources since I could not have made it alone."

"My expectation in the near future is to be able to comfortably provide for my family. My family comes first and I need to make sure they have basic needs such as food and shelter. I also want to make good strategies so that my kids study well without being sent home more often for lack of school fees. I want to be in a state where I do not lack."
