"At the end of this period, I expect to have bought the building materials remaining and possibly plastered the house. I believe it will be a very beautifully completed house that will be the envy of the entire village and I cannot thank GD enough for making this dream come true."

"In the next six months, I believe my wife shall have finished with her course and will start practising what she is learning in college right now. This means she will be able to raise income to help in taking care of the family or contribute partly to help me ease the burden of providing for the family on my own."

Elijah
received a $512 second payment.
"Before GiveDirectly came, I had difficult moments to pay school fees for my children because my income was little mostly from engaging in casual jobs.I fully depend on the livestock I had inherited from my parents to provide for my family as well as raise fees. This meant that I had to sell all of them and I was left with non but I kept the faith of owning livestock since again will come true not having any clue where to get finances for this goal. My life is different than it would have been if I never received this transfer in that I own two oxen and one bull which I bought with GiveDirectly's transfers. I am no longer able to work in the farm because of my age and as a result am left to depend on casual laborers to help with farm activities. Having these two bulls will give me ease in land preparation without putting a lot of resources to it like before. At the same time, I will experience an increased income through sale of milk from the dairy cow therefore I will have enough to meet most of my household needs."

"For a very long time, I have been planning to buy cushions for my seats which currently have very old ones. This is something I have procrastinated about for so long and I need to close it us soon so that I can move onto other plans. The flat old cushions make the seats very uncomfortable to sit on and look untidy as well, so I hope that they will have a better look in six months when I will have bought the new ones."

received a $530 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own goats. I decided to keep them in my compound because of various reasons. First, they take less time to mature compared to other domestic animals, secondly, their food is readily available, they require less supervision finally they are cheaper. Currently, some have started reproducing, this is making me more hopeful. My plan is to start a business of selling some of their offsprings once they mature to the local market. The money that I will be getting will help me in sending back my children to school because some had dropped out of school due to fees arrears. The remaining amount of money that I will be getting from the sale of the offsprings, I will buy some more goats this will make me wealthier. Thanks to GiveDirectly."

"The biggest hardship I have faced is meeting the needs of my family without any source of income. My husband is very old and is often sick;in and out of hospital. The medical expenses as well as all the daily basic needs at home are very costly to us.Since we are too old to work, our farm rarely produces enough to meet all the needs and sometimes we are left depending on our children to help us."

"Food insecurity is our main struggle. During the April rains, we did not get any harvest because the rains did not last long enough. We have to buy food from shops which is more expensive yet I earn just 300 shillings a day from my casual job to sustain a family of 8 people. Aside from food, there are also other needs such as education and house repairs that urgently need to be done to avoid more damage. "

"Supporting education for my children adequately has been the biggest hardship i face. I run a posho mill business which is not that stable due to shortage of cereals (maize)that i normally sell to my clients, thus my business earns me less compared to the needs of my family. My spouse on the other hand works in a tea plantation in a nearby county and his monthly wages of ksh 3500 all goes to buying food and other basic needs for the family. We have Three children studying in secondary school and one in the university and their education fee is too expensive something that has pushed us to sell our livestock and some piece of land to fully support their education."
