How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am grateful to GiveDirectly because I now have some goats which I am currently keeping in my homestead. I did not have any of these and it would have taken me years to buy them. Besides being assets to me, I am expecting them to reproduce and have many of them. I also managed to buy new bedding and replaced the ones I was using. I can now afford to sleep comfortably unlike before receiving this money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in choosing and helping the poor households and giving us the money to transform our lives. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a new bed and mattress to replace the old bedding that I have been using for many years. At least I can now afford to sleep comfortably. In addition to this, I also purchased a solar panel which has been a source of lighting to my household. I then took KES 15000 and bought some goats which I am currently keeping in my homestead. I spent the remaining amount to pay for my children's school fees and did some shopping for them on uniforms as well as buying some foodstuffs and paying for other household expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
For years now, the house that has been my shelter has not been in good condition. It was just in a pitiable condition and beyond renovation. I couldn't, however, afford to buy the required building materials for the construction of a new house. It was until I received my first transfer from GiveDirectly that I managed to buy 20 pieces of iron sheets, building poles and also paid for labour. I am now in the process of constructing a new decent house and at least have a good shelter with my children. To me, building this house is the biggest difference in my daily life, because were it for GiveDirectly coming to us, then I would still be living in my old house which was not safe at all due to its state.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received a message notification early in the morning. When I read its contents, I realised that I had received some money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy now that I would finally build my dream house to live with my family.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I have been living in an old house that was not even safe to shelter in, it was nearly collapsing and because I lacked the resources to build a new one, then I had no other option but live into it. Living in it was hectic, and even worse when it rains. when I received my first transfer, I spent KES 25000 to purchase pieces of iron sheets and building poles in order to construct a new house. Living in a new house has been my biggest dream, which GiveDirectly has fulfilled it. In addition to this, I also spent KES 23000 to purchase nine goats to keep in my homestead. I purchased these goats so that as they reproduce, I will have many of them in the near future. I can readily rely on them to meet my future financial needs like educating my children to higher levels of education. I spent the remaining amount to buy daily foodstuffs and some other basic needs as well as paying for other household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a food secure home for us. We will invest in oxen for ploughing and hybrid seeds for planting during this rainy season that will cost about 35000 shillings. In addition, I will buy 12 goats for 30000 shillings, repair the walls of my house at 15000 shillings and pay school fees of 10000 shillings for my 5 children in primary school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I spend most mornings and evenings collecting trunks that we burn to make charcoal. It is a very exhausting task and I always look forward to night fall so I can rest my tired body making it the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is our main struggle. During the April rains, we did not get any harvest because the rains did not last long enough. We have to buy food from shops which is more expensive yet I earn just 300 shillings a day from my casual job to sustain a family of 8 people. Aside from food, there are also other needs such as education and house repairs that urgently need to be done to avoid more damage.
