"The biggest hardship I face is poverty. I only practice subsistence farming and I yield very little to sustain my family demands. Iam so much lacking in terms of house hold items and sustainability. "

"I still remember vividly, it was at 4 am when I heard a message notification on my phone. I was surprised to receive a message at such an hour since I had never before. I decided to check to know who the sender was. I was left so happy after I realized that GiveDirectly had sent me the promised money."

Mary
received a $528 initial payment.
"I remember it was very early in the morning when I heard an incoming message on my phone. When I checked, it was a message from GiveDirectly confirming that I had received a sum of 55000 KES. I felt so happy since I knew I would be able to buy a motorcycle to help me in my business. My family was so happy too because we had never received such an amount of money before."

received a $22 eighteenth payment.
"My life has changed a lot since I started receiving these transfers, but that does not mean that I am satisfied. I still have a lot that I would love to accomplish, but, unfortunately, the project is soon coming to an end. Before this happens though, I would like to ensure that the leaking thatched kitchen I have is fully renovated into an iron-roofed one so that I will have a comfortable place to cook and not worry about where to get grass which has become almost as expensive as roofing sheets."

"I remember vividly it was around 3 am when I heard the message notification on my mobile phone. When I checked what the message was all about, I confirmed it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly informing me that they had sent my first part of the transfer they had promised. I was overwhelmed with joy at the moment and I could not sleep again."

Wycliff
received a $511 second payment.
"Before , I was employed as a barber in a nearby barber shop and the income was meager with a lot of demands such reporting to work early and living late meaning I didn't have time to spend with my family. My life is different from how it would have been if I never received this transfer I bought a motorcycle (Boda Boda) which I employed myself where I personally ride to make money. The money generated has helped me to sort my family's needs for instance paying school fees and feeding for my children. At the same time, I am able to schedule my work and create time for my family."

"In the next six months, I believe that my family will not lack food to eat. This is because I will have bought enough maize grains and stored them in the granary in sacks. Besides that, I will have bought livestock for the purpose of rearing."

Consolata
received a $511 second payment.
"My life is different since I started to received GiveDirectly's transfers in that I have built a spacious house that fits my family's comfortably. We used to live in a small mud house which could not host all my family members comfortably. My children had to spend their nights at my neighbor's and this made me worry of their safety because of the movements at night which posed a lot of security challenges on their side. Currently, with this spacious house they have their own room where they study and do their assignment without any disturbances. On the other hand, I no longer worry too much about how to get money and buy milk on a daily basis since I own a dairy cow. I am glad because GiveDirectly has enabled me to achieve this. Today, my children have their breakfast with milk tea unlike before when sometimes I couldn't afford to buy them milk."
