Alfred
received a $529 initial payment.
"I felt so happy the moment I realized I had received my first transfer. I was taking breakfast with my family early that morning as I go through my phone. I had no idea of what was already in my account. As I checked my phone, I was surprised by a message from GiveDirectly confirming that I had received a sum of 55000KES. I felt so happy and immediately saw my dream of building a better house for my family becoming real."

Peter
received a $529 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought three heifers. I do casual jobs in the village and my wages are not enough to cater fully for our basic needs in the family thus saving or acquiring more assets can't easily happen. Even though I still incur the high cost of daily expenditure on milk, I am so happy and optimistic that this is soon coming to an end. I have hope that when the heifer reproduced I will be in a position to cut the cost of buying milk. I will also be selling the surplus milk to earn an income to pay school fees for my children and to meet other family needs. I expect offspring too that will be my added asset and security for any financial needs arising in my family. I have devoted half of my time on my farm and reduce casual jobs. I am so much thankful for the support we currently have an asset to take pride in as a family that wouldn't have been if it was not for GiveDirectly."

"I felt so happy the moment I realized I had received money from GiveDirectly. It was very early in the morning when I heard an incoming message notification on my phone and I went ahead to check. I felt so happy because I had never received such an amount of money before. I knew I would be able to build a better and spacious house for my family. I shared the news with my spouse and children and they were so happy too."

Beryl
received a $22 eighteenth payment.
"I expect my life to change in the next six months in that I shall have fixed an iron sheet roof and replace the grassed that one by buying building materials every month with the sent transfer. This is because at the moment the leaky grass-thatched roof of my house is in a deplorable condition which has made it risky for our habitation."

Richard
received a $529 initial payment.
"I run a small business at the nearby center to enable me to sustain my family. The small amount I earn from this alone has never been enough to meet the basic needs of the family thus I engage in mixed farming to increase my sources of income. I had started a poultry farming project but because I did not have enough money, I never made it to a good standard to earn an income. Due to the limited resource, I wasn't able to put up a good chicken coop. It was hard for me controlling my chicken hence had brought a lot of conflicts in my neighborhood since my chicken could destroy their crops. I had been so stressed with this habit and felt ashamed of myself. I have built a good poultry house and this has given me the biggest change in my daily life. I am so happy I have gained the lost peace and harmony in my neighborhood. The conflicts with them ended and we are now in good terms. We do many daily activities together and even our children relate well unlike before. I currently have peace of mind to concentrate on my daily work. Thanks to GiveDirectly it has enabled me to be happy and live well with my neighbors unlike before."

Judy
received a $529 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have built a better and spacious house for my family. I do not have a stable source of income since I depend on casual jobs in the village to sustain my family. I had the challenge of raising money to meet this dream of building a better house because my income from casual jobs catered mainly for my family's needs thus overrides other development. My children used to sleep in my grandmother's house and this was so risky because of working at night. Currently, I have built a better decent house that can host all my family members comfortably. My children no longer spend nights away from home. I no longer fear to welcome visitors into my house because I have a better spacious house to host them. I am so much happy with the support because it has changed our standard of living."

Ochieng
received a $192 initial payment.
"The main goals that I currently have after starting receiving the transfers are as follows. First, I want to have a big depot whereby I will be storing drinks in large quantities. My wish is to supply a variety of drinks in different shops in my village. I hope will really transform me in many ways. Secondly, I would like to start a business for my spouse for selling second-hand clothes. Currently, she is a housewife, this is really making me struggle so hard since they are all depending on me. I believe by the time I will start our lifestyle will change greatly."

Mary
received a $512 second payment.
"My heart is full of joy for having built a house where my children and relatives can sleep in. I used to do casual jobs in the village and the money I got was not enough for both my family's basic needs and to save to acquire a new house. I am a single mother, therefore, having this house sounded like vanity though I kept the dream. The money from GiveDirectly enabled me to buy building materials and pay workers who built a house for me. Nowadays, I am free to welcome anybody who visits because besides my main house I have another one where my children and relatives relax after working on their various roles or get together events as well."
