How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In my village, we do experience water shortage especially during the drought season and the water points are far almost 4 kilometers away hence it is always tiresome to bring water home after going through several trips. The water from the water points is not clean given that people bath, wash clothes, defecate at the banks and children also play in the water, therefore, there was a risk of contracting water-borne diseases to my family. Currently, my life has greatly changed in that my family now has access to clean domestic water use after purchasing a water tank which has a capacity of 3500 litters. I am happy that I have saved my family from the risk of water-borne diseases and we can get extra time to relax too.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well by giving money which was non -refundable and given that beneficiaries had the freedom to choose what ever they wanted to do with the money made them make right choices by investing more of this money on things they lacked. On the other hand, enrollment to the project was voluntary. To me I do not see any negligence on GiveDirectly's operation.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer to buy a water tank 22,500 KES . I am proud that nowadays we longer make several trips to fetch water at the water points which is a distance away. I also bought a dairy cow after topping up my savings together with the remaining transfers.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I run a small business at the nearby center to enable me to sustain my family. The small amount I earn from this alone has never been enough to meet the basic needs of the family thus I engage in mixed farming to increase my sources of income. I had started a poultry farming project but because I did not have enough money, I never made it to a good standard to earn an income. Due to the limited resource, I wasn't able to put up a good chicken coop. It was hard for me controlling my chicken hence had brought a lot of conflicts in my neighborhood since my chicken could destroy their crops. I had been so stressed with this habit and felt ashamed of myself. I have built a good poultry house and this has given me the biggest change in my daily life. I am so happy I have gained the lost peace and harmony in my neighborhood. The conflicts with them ended and we are now in good terms. We do many daily activities together and even our children relate well unlike before. I currently have peace of mind to concentrate on my daily work. Thanks to GiveDirectly it has enabled me to be happy and live well with my neighbors unlike before.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember it was very early in the morning when my neighbor called me asking if I had checked the message on my phone. I rushed to check it and to my surprise, I had received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I knew my dream of building a house and starting a poultry project was to be accomplished with ease.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my transfer to improve my family living standards. I had built a small house before that could accommodate us comfortably but this changed as my family grew. Even though I run a small business, my profits were not enough to cater for the fast-growing household needs and build a house at once. The condition at my home change becoming uncomfortable due to the growing family. When I received my transfer, I used part of it to build a decent spacious house that has brought back the comfort in my home. I took another portion to buy food to add to the little we had. The remaining amount I spent on purchasing build materials-wire mesh, poles and iron sheet to build a chicken coop.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will help me partition my house to get an extra room for my daughters.I will the buy a dairy cow which will provide milk for sale.I have fenced my compound well ready to start poulrty farming. Thanks to the transfers which will help me buy chicken to start off.The remaining part of the transfers will help boost my butchery business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I wake up early in the morning to open my butchery business. This is where I spend the whole day.I close my business at 9 pm.My happiest moments are when I am selling meat at the butchery. This is beacuse it is my own business which I am proud of.It is my main source of income.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have gone through a lot of hardship due to financial constraints.Dating back to when I was a school boy where I dropped out of secondary school in form 2 due to lack of school fees. After dropping out of school I worked as a casual labourer in a town far from my home.I met friends who taught me wood curving skills. This is where I worked so hard to make and sell my carvings. From this savings I was able to start a butchery business which is now my main source of income.I now have seven children and still the challenge of getting enough money to cater for the basic needs is there.I believe that if I had completed my studies I could be in a better position financially.
