"Food insecurity is a challenge and most of my income goes into buying food for the family. Living with a family of six on such a small piece of land is strenuous because it is not enough to farm. I, therefore, rely on leasing land for farming which is expensive compared to if I owned a big parcel of land."

"I have been sickly for five years after getting involved in an accident. This has been a challenge because I am unable to provide for my family hence relying on well-wishers and my eldest son for money. I feel like I am burdening them a lot since they have their own families to look after also. Having a reliable source of income will be better than not having any."

"Financial instability is the biggest hardship I am currently facing. I am an elderly widow who depends on charcoal burning. My age does not allow me to be more productive in my work. I do not have any alternative way, this has remained to be the only hope. The earnings of KES 450 in a week are not enough to sustain all the needs of my family of 2 members such as shelter."

"The current challenge I am facing is lack of job. I can not afford to provide three meals a day for my family because I do not get work every day. Missing work means coming home without food."

"The biggest challenge is getting a stable source of income. I am a business person running a small shop in the nearby town. My income fluctuates due to increased taxes on household items. My customers have reduced since they no longer afford to buy them. Food items expire and this has given me a loss. I am now afraid that if these items get rising I might be forced to close down my shop."

"The biggest challenge is financial constraints. I have a daughter in college and it has been a challenge getting money to pay for her academic fee. I have sold all my livestock which was also my source of income to pay for her school fees. The last cow I had died recently and I am now worried that I would not be able to pay for her school fees yet she was about to sit for her final exams."

"The trainings and the registration process were done well and all the people in our village received the transfer and spent it well. Most invested in dairy farming and paying school fees for their children. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well."

"I spent KES 13,000 on paying school fees for my daughter in secondary school. I am so grateful because she is now studying well without being sent home. This was affecting her performance in school. KES 9,000 on purchasing building materials and build a poultry house. This has given me peace of mind since I know my hens are safe and secured.I spent KES 8,000 on purchasing two goats .Goats reproduce twice per year and help In case of emergency since it can be sold out. I sent KES 6,000 to my son who is in the University to pay rent and buy household items. The rest of the money I bought food and iron sheet ready to build a spacious house for my sons. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards. ,"

"The biggest challenge is food insecurity. I have a family of 8 members and to feed all of them I need a lot of food or rather a good source of income. This has not been achievable since I have a small piece of land 0.5 acres which is not sufficient to grow food crops. Its yield is low due to limited space and getting money for purchasing food after depletion is also a challenge since I am a casual laborer and getting those casual jobs is also a challenge."

"I do not have a new goal that I did not have before receiving the transfer. I had planned on building a better and more spacious house for my family. We lived in a small grass-thatched house that could not host all my family members comfortably. This was my main concern and first priority that was on my list of to do items."
