How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Purchasing building materials to build a poultry house is the new goal that I did not have before receiving the transfer. When I received the transfer I decided to build a decent house where my hens would be safe and secure. The construction is ongoing yet to complete in the next few months.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The registration process were done well most of the people received the transfer and spent it well. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 13,000 on paying school fees for my daughter in secondary school. I am so grateful because she is now studying well without being sent home. This was affecting her performance in school. KES 9,000 on purchasing building materials and build a poultry house. This has given me peace of mind since I know my hens are safe and secured.I spent KES 8,000 on purchasing two goats .Goats reproduce twice per year and help In case of emergency since it can be sold out. I sent KES 6,000 to my son who is in the University to pay rent and buy household items. The rest of the money I bought food and iron sheet ready to build a spacious house for my sons. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards. ,

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 11 am when I was preparing lunch for my children who were about to come home from school. I was not expecting the money on that particular date since we had only been informed that we were going to receive the money before 20th of that month. A neighbor called on me around that time bearing good news that she had already received hers. I immediately got down to work as I implement the work that i had planned
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is the fact that I have been able to pay school fees, stocked food and built a new house. I norm ly rely on support from my child who works as a teacher to pay school fees for his siblings and even meet family needs. I was happy that I was able to give him a helping hand through GiveDirectly transfers. The building of a new house for my two children who recently graduated to adulthood is the biggest difference of all. We could not afford to raise enough money to build them a house and they had to go sleeping in the neighbours house-something that was so embarrassing as well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 12000 to pay school fees, used KES 10000 to stock food and used the remaining amount to improve our house. My children had for a long time been sleeping over at a neighbours place something that was embarrassing and demeaning as well. I had had the desire of constructing a new house for them but I could not accumulate enough money from my odd casual jobs. The payment of school fees gave one of my children a break having helped us to pay school fees for his siblings for a long time

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means an additional source of income. I have a cow that give me only about KES 100 per day. Adding another cow will bring my income to about KES 300 per day. This will be enough to provide for my family and to also save part of it towards school fees. I will spend about KES 50,000 on buying a dairy cow. I will further support my children in school with about KES 50,000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last six months, my eldest son started building a nice house for me. He works as a teacher, from this, he build a timber walled house and plastered the floor, thus improving my home.He also helped us in paying school fees for our last born daughter. Because of this, I am able to focus on acquiring a source of income with the money that I will get from GiveDirectly.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of a reliable source of income is a big challenge that I currently face. My farming is only subsistence and my husband earns through making sandals from old tyres. We spend approximately KES 200 per day in the household, yet our income combined, is just about KES 100. This problem further, makes me unable to raise enough money for school fees for my children. I hope to address this when I buy a dairy cow to increase what I earn.
