received a $482 second payment.
"After receiving and utilizing the second I developed some goals one being an entrepreneurial goal. Since I have a plot of land at the trading center, I have a vision of building some rental houses. So, once doors open and I get some money this will be my number one priority because rental houses are now the leading and lasting investments in our area."

"GiveDirectly did so well by holding our hands and empower us from the lowest level of life we were in to a good life standard where we can stand on our feet. It helped us to build houses, buy livestock as well as pay school fees for our children. In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well and it has no fault at all in fact I would recommend it to come again for a third time if possible."

Chelangat
received a $466 second payment.
"I have been married for the past fifteen years. Since then, we have been struggling to fend for our family and the past five years we have been buying a liter of milk or two at KES 40 a liter. Though I was employed as a government teacher three years ago before my husband who works for a private company. I still couldn't afford to buy a dairy cow because I took a land loan which is still being deducted.
Fortunately, when I received the second transfer I spent KES 25,000 on a heifer. This will soon reproduce and be a source of milk and income for my family.
Secondly, I completed the construction of my timber-framed house that had stalled using the first transfers. So when I received the second transfer I used KES 15,000 to furnish my house with four sofa sets. These have made my new house very beautiful unlike the old sofas I had which I shifted to the kitchen.
Thirdly, I also cleared school fees arrears with KES 10,000 for my daughter in school. This is because the salary that would be used for school fees payment was spent on repayment of a land loan. The remaining KES 5000 was used on household items and clothing. This is because we had food and clothes shortages."

"In my opinion, the organization operates uniquely. The money was sent directly into my Mpesa account without involving governmental officials. Also, there were no restrictions in regards to how one would wish to spend the cash transfers. I do not see any part that GiveDirectly needs to change."

Richard
received a $467 second payment.
"The construction of a new house and a kitchen for my family of three topped my list of expenditures when I received my second transfer. MY son had been moving from one household to the other seeking accommodation every night since the single old house I had at home could not give him a room. I had to spend KES 30000 on the construction materials and the labor charges paid to the constructor specifically for his house that is now complete and he comfortably sleeps and wakes up on his own time. I also spent another KES 13000 on the construction of a small kitchen that has created more space that was set aside as a kitchen in the bigger house. The air in our living room is now clear and devoid of the fumes and soot from the kitchen. I later spend the remaining KES 9500 on the payment of college tuition for my son. I am happy for the transformation that my household has registered in the past few months and hoping that I will keep working hard on other projects that I established with the first transfer."

Caren
received a $482 initial payment.
"Even though I had been running a milk-buying-and-selling business, providing at least a liter every morning for my family would strain my running capital so much that I would sometimes sell out some assets to top it up. At the receipt of the first transfer, we made it a priority to obtain a dairy cow at KES 22000 that has been providing enough milk for my family of five. I am glad now that my family enjoys enough milk, and my business is doing quite well since I am no longer chopping off any amount from it. I also spent KES 23000 of the remaining amount on buying 20 iron sheets and building poles that I am looking forward to using in the construction that is yet to start in the coming week. We had been living in a small kitchen that was getting smaller for my growing family, but now I am happy that a new construction project of a better house is up. I saved the remaining amount to pay any labor charge that will arise during the construction period."

Joyce
received a $466 second payment.
"It is a season in our community that we are putting up plans that enhance the successful right of passage for our sons. This marks a transition from their childhood to manhood through circumcision. This never came into mind when I was planning to spend both transfers but at the moment I am building my savings to allow him to be accommodated by a neighbor with two of his sons undergoing the same passage."
