How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For sometime now I have been relying on a small business that I run in a nearby town as well as dairy keeping to earn a living. I have however come to realize that the shop that I run gives very little in terms of returns and I sometimes even run into losses. In the next few days, I am planning on specializing in dairy keeping. With the current drought situation, even farming of crops has been an excercise in futility. I am so happy that I was able to use the first and the second transfer to improve my dairy keeping project by completing a dairy house that I had built halfway. I now have two dairy cows with one of them producing 17 liters of milk per day. My plan is to add the number to 3 once the drought situation has stopped and we have the rains.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does very well by carefully selecting places that are in dire need of the money. Looking at the kind of people that were enrolled in my village and the kind of investments that they have made makes me so happy. Nearly every household now has a living asset that will help them even in the days to come. Giving the support in form of cash was another good thing from GiveDirectly. Different people have different needs and they so much respect that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the entire transfer of $550 to complete a gate that I had constructed halfway and which had stalled for quite sometime. I had ran out of cash and the little that I got from farming and my shop would just provide enough to pay school fees for my child. This was therefore not a priority to me. When I received the second transfer, I thought this was a perfect opportunity to erect the steel gate which had already been assebled. I therefore bought a few bags of cement and sand. I also used some of the money to meet the cost of erecting the gate by paying the workers that helped in putting it up. I am so happy that my compound is now more secure more safe for us courtesy of GiveDirectly transfers.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so much happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. We were eagerly waiting for the money to complete our dairy unit project and when it finally came we felt so much happy and got down to work almost immediately. The project had had to stop for quite sometime since we could not afford to raise enough money to complete it and at the same time complete other projects like buying food for family
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the dairy unit that I was able to set up to its completion. This is a project that I started long a go with a vision of being a serious dairy keeper as a source of income but which had stalled for quite sometime due to lack of enough money to push it through. I do not have other sources of income except for farming and I could only wait for better days to come by. I am so happy that it finally to became a reality that I now have a complete cowshade. I am a father of one and my vision is to see to it that I become more independent financially even going forward.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used all of my recent transfer to build a dairy unit. The money came when I had already built the shade and set up the troughs and it assisted me in cementing the floor and buying a water tank for collection of water from the same cowshade. I am happy that the project is now complete and I can now fully concentrate on dairy keeping that I have been passionate about. My wife works as a teacher and I am looking forward towards giving her a helping hand by engaging in dairy keeping. We used to rely on maize farming but is nowadays very unreliable since they don't get to mature faster.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Maize has been our staple food and also a source of income however, in the last 5 years maize has been affected by Lethal Necrosis and its yield has reduced. We have resorted to dairy farming but due to small pieces of land, a person is limited to two or 3 cows. In my ambition, I wanted to have a good dairy farm with zero grazed cows and since they do not need a big space but due to lack of money to construct a dairy house I have not been able to achieve it. So when I receive this transfer I will spend my entire transfer to construct it. It's my joy that my long-time dream will be fulfilled.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My father owns land in Mauche Nakuru County where I had planted maize. The yield was good and I sold all the maize I got and used the money I got to complete my house that had stalled for more than 6 months. This brought joy and happiness into my life, my family now has a permanent and spacious house.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is getting a stable source of income. I am a business person running a small shop in the nearby town. My income fluctuates due to increased taxes on household items. My customers have reduced since they no longer afford to buy them. Food items expire and this has given me a loss. I am now afraid that if these items get rising I might be forced to close down my shop.
