"My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I could not have managed to build a house for my son and lease land due to lack of money. Today, I have peace of mind. Generally, I do not go for casual jobs so much because I have started poultry farming which helps in supplementing my needs when I sell some of the birds. The demand is high in our village and this has enabled me to take care of my needs with ease."

"There is a really big difference in my life now that I received the transfers. I have really improved a great deal something I would not have gotten any money to facilitate the changes. What I have now would not have been there if not for the transfers. Right from clothing for the whole family, the growing cows, poultry project, furniture just to mention but a tiny few are some of the great things GiveDirectly has done in my life."

"My expectation in the near future is to have an improved lifestyle and future for my family. I want my children to have good health and excel in their studies by ensuring that I cater for their school fees. Seeing my children excel in both school work and the general life will make me a happy parent and that is my prayer."

"My top Priority is to buy a plumbing machine and start my own plumbing business. I am a plumber for a construction company hired on a contract basis and sometimes I see them hiring plumbing machines for construction.Having my own plumbing machine will be able to generate income by allowing companies to hire from me. Secondly I will use part of the money to help boost my wife's retail shop here in Mathare. Her shop is quite small as she sells in small scale. The transfer will be used to expand her shop and buy products in bulk. Both ventures will help our finances grow and sustain our household needs. Lastly I will pay school fees for my child. It stresses me to see him sent home for fee arrears and as his father I feel that I am disappointing him and that I am not meeting my responsibility of providing him quality education. By paying his school fees I am sure that he can go to school without worrying about being sent home for fee arrears."

"My Son got sick over 20 years ago, a condition that has made him run mad. I spent all my financial resources to seek medical care but I did not succeed. This situation stressed me a lot that I fell into depression, which has resulted into hypertension. Since then, I have not gotten back to shape and I am struggling too much to provide for my family."

"My children sleep in a kitchen and this makes me quite unhappy. This is because my house does not have enough space to accommodate the whole family. I will therefore use the transfer to construct a bigger and better house. I will also purchase oxen to scale up farming as well as hiring them to my neighbours to generate income. In addition, I will clear school fee arrears for my two children and also spend some for medical checkup. "

"Owning livestock is a dream that I have always wished to come true. However, it has been like a fairy tale to me because I do not have the money to purchase them. From my earnings I have to prioritize between food and investment where the former always win. To achieve my dream, I will use the transfer to purchase cows and goats for rearing. This will make my transfer useful because they will multiply and give me returns in future."

"My wife opted to separate me six years ago because I have no any source of income to sustain the family. This has depressed me a lot due to the loneliness and the burden of being the only care taker for my children. I am forced to stay at home, something that can not give me any opportunity to go and search for jobs outside our village. Therefore, I consider lack of parental support from my wife as the biggest hardship I have ever faced."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own a big hotel. Previously, I have been working in a friend's hotel which I was getting a low salary which was not enough for the family's basic needs. I now feel great because I have my own. I am hoping with time my life will never be the same again. Because currently, the business is doing so well. This will improve my financial status and I will be able to pay school fees for my children and also cater to their basic needs."

"My ambition in life is to venture into the real estate business. I want to build homes and sell them. This is one industry I have always wanted to venture in. The profit I make, I will use it to build houses mostly for the not so priviledged people, in this case women. I do not like that they have to hustle a lot even in their old age and still go back home and cater to other issues like house rent. I will build houses for them for free and let them live there. I find it sad that rich people have a lot of money but are so stingy in helping the poor, this is one thing I would want to do differently when I get money."
