"My top concern is my family because of the challenges we face in the slum. My mother is a single parent and she normally comes home late at night while drunk. This led me to drop out of school in primary and started to fend for myself at a younger age. I started to sleep outside while at the same time joined a gang of criminals in Kiamutisya Mathare. I involved myself in crime by snatching phones in Kiamutisya village Mathare along Juja road. I lost many of my friends along the way due to crime through mob justice and extrajudicial killings by trigger happy policemen. I spent most of the money that I had received from crime towards contribution of my friends burial, so I realized it was of no benefit to me and I quit crime because it does not pay. I therefore fear for my two younger brothers who may drop out of school because they still live with my mother who is a drunkard and they may end up in crime just like me."

"My ambition is to become a successful businessman in future. I would want to own a wholesale shop and be able to sell my products in retail shops around Mathare. There are many retail shops in Mathare and this will provide a ready market for my business as I will be supplying them with goods. I expect mylife to change completely as compared to my current status where I am not guaranteed to get work at construction sites. Going back empty handed at the end of the day normally stresses me which sometimes make me feel hopeless yet I am the sole breadwinner of the family. I am hopeful that with this new business, I will be able to live a good life, support my family financially and be able to provide for their upkeep with much ease."

"When I receive this money,I want to buy one more cow to add to the one I have.Since I spend most of the time around my farm,I believe dairy farming is good for me.This is a good source of income that I can manage myself.I also have a plan of building a house since this one is too small. It has only one room and it is grass thatched. "On my usual day, I wake up early in the morning at around 5.00 am and I go to work, I am a casual labourer, mostly dealing with construction. I get jobs in different locations, this requires me to wake up very early not to be late and miss out on the job. Before I leave for work I make sure I have prepared my daughters school uniform and I leave them with a neighbor who will prepare her and take her to school together with her children. In the evening I come back home cook supper for the two of us and retire to bed after a very hetcic and tiresome day.
In my free time, I relax at home, at times hang out with friends but I try to avoid staying in groups due the constant police partols in our area, youths tend to get arrest easily because of sitting in groups."

Benter
received a $522 second payment.
"My life is different from how it would have been if I never received the transfer in that, I could not have managed to build a spacious house or take my child to college on time. I have a sugar plantation that I normally depend on but I had to wait for the plants to mature so as to get money from its sales which could have taken a long time to accomplish my goals. Seeing my children pursuing their education makes me a happy mother. The fact that I know that they will not be sent home due to fee arrears for some time has given me peace of mind since I had paid for other terms too."

Carolyne
received a $49 eighth payment.
"When I started receiving these transfers, I made a decision to be saving a bit each month for future plans and I am glad that I have been true to my wishes so far. I saved part of the money I received this month in a fixed bank account as I have been doing since I started receiving the money, used some of it to buy materials for my mat making business and spent the remaining amount on foodstuff and other household needs."

"My top concern is gang violence and crime. As a young man in Mathare I am always in worry of not living to an old age. I come from a village in Mathare where crime is rampant and I even know some of my peers who have engaged in crime. Some have been killed for theft and robbery, others are still in prison but a few of them have been given a second chance and they have now reformed. Some of them are even in my group. Our hall is a safe space for youths within my village, our programs have created employment opportunities and now most youths are not as idle as before.
I fear that if I do not have any work then I will be forced to get involved with the wrong crowd. Our group has also been at the center of police brutality and anytime there are criminal activities in the area we are their suspects. I live in fear that these police will continue killing my peers and because they always disrupt our group programs we sometimes don't show up for work in fear of being arrested for no reason. "

"Receiving this money means I will be able to build an iron roofed house.
The one that I currently sleep in is grass thatched but maintaining it just turned out to be so hard.
Grass is very scarce these days.
It is just by chance that one can roof the house well.
Some times I have had to sleep in a leeking house not because I am lazy but because of scarcity of grass. "
