"This money has given us a head start to the ambitions of starting a business I had. I have been under divorce for more that two years now and since the time my husband left. Things have been tough for me especially taking care of the children and my other relative whose marriage ended too.
Apart from the plans of opening up a grocery, I will also buy extra beddings for my family. We shall also add some fertilizer for the next growing season and extra food too. I am very happy to be included in this program as I used to struggle to find a better opportunity to earn some income."

"My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I living a comfortable life. Through the transfer, I was able to improve the condition of my house by constructing an additional room and purchase proper beddings. Previously, I was living in a small house and using traditional bed which was not comfortable to sleep on. In addition, I am now owning a piece of land after acquiring an acre with my transfer. I am planning to start clearing it for farming purposes, this will assure me of food security for the family. Furthermore, I was able to start livestock rearing using my transfer, a future investment for the family."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in assisting the poor households in the community by coming up with a cash transfer program that is unconditional. I don't see anything that it does not do well."

Kabunda
received a $508 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials which include iron sheets, building poles, nails, timber, and threads. This was purposely for the construction of a new house becasue the previous one was a temporary hut with old roofing and very small. With a family of four, it couldn't accommodate us all and they had to seek shelter from friends and relatives. I also paid the mason KES 9000 as his labor charge. Also, I cleared school fees fr my children who are in primary school ad they are now studying peacefully unlike before. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuff for the family."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in life is unfavorable climatic conditions in our region. Over the past 10 years, we have been unable to harvest enough crops on our farms due to unknown diseases. Initially, we used to rely on maize to cater to both education and domestic expenses. This has become something of the past due to unknown diseases which affect our maize. We used to harvest 22 bags of maize on our 1.5 acres of land unlike today, we harvest only 8 bags which is not enough to sustain a family of 5. Life has become intolerable and this has led to sleepless nights. Thanks to Give Directly for their timely entry into our village."

Mwenda
received a $508 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now happier and very hopeful. I am now sleeping under a very decent shelter that is spacious enough with long-lasting roofing. Being in a polygamous marriage life has never been easy. We have been sleeping under one small house together with my other two cowives and our children had to seek shelter from their friends. This was always frustrating because we have never experience the joy of living with our children under one roof. This is because since our spouse passed on some years back, each one of us has been struggling to make sure the children get their daily bread. Which sometimes was not achievable and therefore constructing my own hose was still a dream to me. However, after receiving the cash transfer, I had to prioritize building a new house which for now my life has been so good. My children no longer have to seek shelter from friends I stead, we are sheltering one roof."
