"I was married into a polygamous family as a first wife. My husband left me and my children and settled in his second wife's home. I did not get his support and I had to strain in order to educate my children which later caused me to have problems with my legs. I cannot fend for myself now since I am old. I would like to buy a cow now that I cannot till my land in order to get milk that I can sell and money to support me."

"Old age comes with a lot of things. We cannot produce a lot from our farm because the labor is low. This has affected our income and the amount of food used to feed us. Finding manual labor is a hard task because we do not have money to pay for it."

"My life is different because when I look at my surrounding I am not the only one doing well, everybody in the village has gained a lot from Givedirectly. The is more availability of transport in terms of making moves into the main town. And also a lot of people are building proper homes. So in general its just not about my life changing its also the surrounding that I am in that has changed."

"I am a livestock farmer and I mainly depend on keeping poultry and dairy cows. At the moment poultry keeping has been a good source of income since I can make close to USD. 15 a month but diseases and predators have been the major challenges. With this money I would like to build a spacious and safer unit for them complete with a feeding system and egg laying area. I will also purchase an incubation unit so that I shall be selling small chicks. All these will increase my income to probably USD. 85 monthly."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done well by giving us aid without any discrimination. I was able to achieve a lot within a short period of time. I do not find anything that Givedirectly has not done well."

"Financial inadequacy has been the biggest hardship I have faced in life. I have been struggling to make ends meet through farming but what I get from it, is hardly enough to meet my financial needs. I have 0.5 acres of land which I have subdivided into portions. In this land, I have grown maize, beans, and kales. When I sell the product, it is not enough to cater to my domestic expenses, not even enough to save. Owing to this, we separated with my wife 2 years ago and my prayer has been to get some cash to settle her dowry."

"When I received my transfer, I spent KES 12,000 on food and clothes for my children . I decided on this so that my children would not feel left out whenever they meet with their peers as almost every family in the village was buying new clothes for their children. I saved the remaining amount in my mshwari account. I decided on this so that I will use them to pay school fees for my two children. One will be joining form one this year while the other will be transitioning to form four. Paying their fees on time will enable them concentrate on their studies as they will not be sent back home."
