"For along time I have wanted to have many cattle as I used to , most of my cattle approximately twenty four cows were paid of as dowry for my two sons.I, therefore, want to buy at least two dairy cows worth sh 60,000. The milk they produce and the young ones will sustain me in terms of food and nutrition and also I shall be selling the calves to gather for household needs. I also want to build a modern house because the current house I live in is small and smoky. The smoke has affected my eyes a lot, building the new house will therefore help me since I can only be cooking in the kitchen and spend most of my time in the other house ."

Joyce
received a $508 second payment.
"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have been able to rent a piece of land and planted maize and potatoes. Our area is semi arid and sometimes planting is done once per year. I always rent farms at different places where planting is done twice per year. I have been doing this horticulture farming before GiveDirectly came to our area. The big challenge that I had was lack of enough capital. I was not in a position to get good harvest because I was not in a position to plant on time and the piece of land I could afford to pay was small. When I received the second transfer I was in a position to rent a much bigger piece of land. I was also in a position to buy seeds and fertilizer on time. I did did planting the the right time. I am so much grateful for the support because I know I will have the good harvest this coming season and my family will have enough to eat. I will sell the surplus to earn an income to pay the school fees for my children. I will also save some amount to spend on the next planting season. I am so grateful for the support."

"Receiving this money means being self-reliable in my life. This is because am a housewife, my husband is the only breadwinner of this household. I am planning to spend $800 of my transfer to start a business of selling clothes, shoes, and cosmetics. This business will act as a source of income and am assured of getting a profit of $20 per day. For the remaining amount, I will buy 2 dairy ingenious cows to produce milk for commercial to generate an income. By having the two sources of income, I will no longer depend on my husband for everything in the house. I will be in a position of catering to the needs of the family and also paying school fees for my siblings who are still in school. This will boost my self-esteem."

"Receiving this money means food security to my household, since am planning to upscale my farming. This is because I commonly farm only 1/2 acre of land producing a 50kg bag of maize which is sustain my family of 3 for one month. I am planning to expend a maximum of $400 on my first transfer to buy oxen and ox plough which will enable me to farm 4 acres of land. This will ensure I get more harvest of 8 bags of 90kg each, which will sustain my family of 3 for 10 months. The rest amount of my first transfer, I will buy iron sheets to renovate my house which is now leaking. I will spend the utmost $300 of my second transfer to buy 10 goats which will act as a long-term investment project for the household. I will use the remaining amount of my second transfer to buy food for my family."
