"My life is different from how it was in that, I was able to take care of my children's school fees and also took my son to a driving course without straining. This has enabled him to get jobs. Through this, he is able to support me in settling some of the household expenses. I also managed to invest in sugarcane plantation that I will benefit from in a few month's time."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that, I have repossessed my two pieces of land that the money lenders had taken after I settling their debts. In addition, I have got most of the household items that I didn't have before(a carpet, plastic chairs, a blanket, new clothes) and a solar that lights my house. Prior to receiving this transfer, I didn't have enough money to buy those household items and pay off the debts I had."

So far, I have purchase some of the materials and I hope that I will buy the rest soon. "

"I lost my husband in 1989 and raising up my six children has been my biggest hardship. He left me with four young children at that time and I did not know where to begin.I was 22 years of age at that time. It has taken the grace of God to where I am now.We have slept hungry several times,my children have been in and out of school, two children did not go past primary school;all these because of lack of money.Maybe if they had gotten the right education they would be helping me right now.I depended on casual labour for a long time.Casual labour earns very little(1 USD a day) .Currently,I depend on subsistence farming but still it does not provide enough to support all the family's needs."

"I build a small shop by the road side at the edge of my piece of land. It's one year now and the shop is empty because I was left with no money to stock it.I am now glad because with the money from Give Directly I will be able to stock my shop and set the business on.I will invest Ksh 20,000(200 USD) on this business. My shop will be closer to the villagers hence they will be able to get some of the items they need at their convenience. My other plan is buying a dairy cow costing around Ksh 30,000(300 USD).I currently have one cow and I feel its time to add another since I have grown enough feeds to support one more cow.I sell 2 litres of milk in a day and my aim is buying a more improved breed so that I can be selling around 8 litres a day. This will translate to ksh 200 in a day.(2 USD) "

"I have been cultivating our 0.5 acre piece of land since I got married. In it,we plant maize mainly for consumption. For a family of seven, even a bountful harvest from this small piece cannot sustain us till the next harvest-bearing in mind that maize is our staple food.Over the past three years,a strange maize crop disease struck and at the same time rainfall patterns changed drastically hence aggrevating the situation. As a result,I have not had even half what I harvested in the past. This means that there is very little to eat in our home.As a mother,I cannot sit and watch my children starve therefore am forced to seek casual jobs so that whatever little I earn I can buy maize. This has been the biggest hardship I have faced"

"Being a farmer,my only source of income is farming. In my small piece of land,I mostly plant maize ,sorghum and beans. This is both to provide us food as well as ,when there is a surplus, sell in order to meet all other needs of my family.Over the past few years, the rains have been quite unreliable hence there have been poor harvests. There has also been a crop disease that destroyed maize plants. This has really affected us in the sense that there is hardly any food to eat let alone for sale.As a result,we have sometimes had to forego some meals in a day. With young children around, this is often very tough. This is the biggest hardship I have faced"
