"Before the transfers, I did not have any source of income. I used to depend on inconsistent income from construction work which was also paying very less. I could not even take my children to school and even support my parents as I would want to. I ended up having a lot of debts from my friends which I was not able to pay back with the little income I get from the same job. When I started receiving these transfers, I knew finally my help had come and God had answered my prayers. I have set up a cloth business which has helped me pay back all the debts I had from the profits I get on a daily basis and even take my son to school. I am able to handle my needs successfully without help because of the business I started with the transfers."

"Taking my mind back to that early morning when I received a notification message from GiveDirectly, I really became so happy waking up every member of my household who was still asleep. The message found me already up since I was preparing breakfast for my daughter who was going on with her final examinations. We all celebrated the blessing which had befallen our family. It really brought a renewed hope that we will finally establish the projects we had been thinking of."

"In six months' time, I will have completed paying school fees for my children who are in secondary school. This will be a milestone that I will have made in my life and my family at large. My hope is to also settle and think about how I will put investment thoughts together to help me venture into an income-generating activity that will sort our lives as we go along."

"It was around 7 am when my phone rang. I was doing some cleaning in my compound when I received the message. Since I am illiterate I decided to call my helper so that she could interpret the message for me. After checking, she said it was an mpesa message from Give Directly. They had sent my first transfer as they had promised. I was so excited to have gotten the news. I remember I left whatever I was doing and started planning how I would use the money to change my life."

"My life will be different in the next six months in that I will have bought a cow with part of my monthly transfers. I do not have any livestock now and it is my dream to have some. Since I did not have a stable source of income, I was not able to achieve this goal. Now that GD has elevated my financial life, I will be able to buy one even if I will buy on a hire purchase basis. In the next six months, I am determined to have my own livestock. In my area, livestock is considered a sign of wealth and I would not want to be considered poor forever because I do not have any livestock. I know I will be able to achieve this dream because GD will fulfil their promise."

"In the next six months, I will have bought the required building materials for putting up a new house. I am currently living in an iron-roofed house though it was built ten years ago and its condition has been worsening on a daily basis. The roof is rusty and whenever there is a strong wind in my area, I have to call a mason to come to repair it because the iron sheets do come off. The mud on the walls too keep on falling off and generally the house is not in a stable condition. For now, I have decided to save my monthly transfers so that I can be able to put up a decent and durable house. I would not want to wait until this one collapses is when I start gathering resources to build a new one. This is why I will use my monthly transfers to buy building materials such as iron sheets, timber and nails to use in building the new house."

"My life will be different in the next six months in that I will have finished the tailoring course which I am currently undertaking. At the rate which I get money on a monthly basis from GD, I will be able to raise enough money to clear the required fees arrears and buy my own tailoring machine to start my own business. I know by the time I am finished with the course, I will have enough money to buy my machine and start my own business which will help me in meeting my needs and even support the family well. At least, I won't have to depend on my parents as I have always done in the past."

"When GiveDirectly came for enrollment in my village, I had lost hope of completing building a house for my family. This is because I wanted to concentrate on paying my children's school fees on time. The transfers came in handy as it enabled me to complete building this house and to clear my children's school fees. I will open a shop in one of the rooms in my newly completed house. This will help me generate some income daily as I work on my farm since it will be easier to operate it when at home. I will be using this income to meet my family needs on time."

"In six months' time, my wish of furnishing the house with seats would have come through. Having a house without seats is even a hindrance to guests' invitation because of the shame that one would feel for not having such basic assets. I hope that this is going to be successful."
