"It has been tough trying to get a stable source of income.Initially ,crop farming was our main source of income but it failed us terribly. This is due to low yield caused by crop diseases and unpredictable weather patterns. At one time we borrowed a loan from a financial institution so that we could start a business.I started buying and selling milk while my spouse sold cereals.Due to low production in this area, the businesses collapsed. We had to sell the cows we had to offset the loan. This was a major set back.We currently depend on dairy farming but it also not consistent due to the changing climate. "Owning a dairy cow and four goats is the biggest difference in my daily life. In my community livestock is greatly valued. It is usually seen as a source of wealth since once they reproduce over a short period of time. These livestock will come in handy in the foreseen future most especially to cater for my children's education after selling part of them . Meanwhile, we will continue enjoying the milk from the cow."

"After my mother passed away all the responsibilities were left to my father who is a causal worker at a nearby tea factory . His income could barely sustain our needs . It was a struggle and their was a point in time we were rendered homeless and from to the community empathy they had a fundraiser . These amount of money that was collected facilitated the construction of a one room house hosting six of us . This one room served a a kitchen and the main house as well . Currently my life is different in that I have bought building materials and extended our house into a two roomed one which accommodates my family . I am thankful for GiveDirectly's transfers that have enabled us to disapprove of some of my villagers who used to look down upon our family."

This on other hand has given me happiness and peace seeing them attend school consistently .Secondly , I now keep four goats in my homestead to the courtesy of GiveDirectly . To me its a saving for the future of my young children's education. I know once they reproduce and increase in number, I will be able to sell and help me out of rising financial problems."

Alexander
received a $524 second payment.
"My life has change than it would have been if I never received the transfer since I have a dairy cow with the courtesy of GiveDirectly . It has always been my desire to expand my herd for a long period of time but my income couldn't afford to buy any of them because I have a large family to take care of including orphans who are under my care. I intend to sell the offsprings once they mature in the near future hence that will assist me to provide them with daily needs and pay their school fees because every single day I envy to provide for my family and the orphan the best that this world can allow me to offer them. Secondly, I have beatified my house through painting it hence I am honored to be living in a clean environment . Thanks to you GiveDirectly."

Josephine
received a $542 initial payment.
"I had acquired a plot of land which I intended to construct a rental house. This is a longterm asset which to me would serve as an income-generating activity. I was not, however, able to complete the full payment for this plot. When I received this money, I paid KES 30000 to clear the outstanding balance and I am now in full ownership of this plot which gives freedom to start my project. I am now in the process of purchasing adequate building materials to start the project. I am expecting to construct a decent house from my savings that will ensure I earn a monthly rental income. So far, this is the biggest difference in my daily life."

"I was living in a house in which was in a very bad state. Its roof was dilapidated and not spacious enough. It was an old house that was beyond repair. When I received my first transfer, I bought building materials which include 30 pieces of iron sheets, building poles, nails and timber which enabled me to build and finish my new house. To me, living in this new house is the biggest difference in my daily life. I never knew it could be this soon. I thank God for bringing help through this organization."
