How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The fact that I now own a pair of oxen has made my life to be so different. Considering the fact that I did now have any plans of owning them anytime soon due to to the poverty lif that had. Through them, I will be preparing my farm in time and plough in so many acres unlike before whereby I could not utilize my while farm because I was using my own hands. I am now positive that I will be harvesting a lot since the bulls can plough so many acres in a few days.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well in various sectors. This is because of the organization its promises by giving us the money on the exact time they had said during the registration. To add to this, the transfers were unconditional. We would choose what we wanted to purchase according to our family's needs.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some pieces of iron sheets at a total of KES 7000. This was the completion of my house which I had initially started constructing using my first transfers. I then paid the Masson KES 8000 his labor charge. I then paid tuition fees for my children who were about to sit for their exams. The remaining amount of money I bought enough foodstuffs for my family and some other household items like utensils and chairs.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Owning a permanent spacious house is the biggest difference in my daily life. I have been yearning to construct a decent house but due to my low financial status, I could not afford it. My previous house was in bad condition. It was a grass-thatched roof house that had many cracks on the walls. Whenever it rained especially when it was at night, we could not sleep till dawn. My children were even forced to sleep at my neighbor's house which was not safe at all since they had to walk in the dark. But the coming of GiveDirectly to my life has transformed everything. The story is now different since we no longer dread the winter seasons. Secondly, it was hard for them to study at home because the house did not have enough space. I feel this was affecting their academic performance. Ever since I constructed a new house they have been studying comfortably without any interference and I feel good as a parent. I can even invite some of my friends unlike before whereby I felt embarrassed to invite anyone.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 am when my phone rang. I was doing some cleaning in my compound when I received the message. Since I am illiterate I decided to call my helper so that she could interpret the message for me. After checking, she said it was an mpesa message from Give Directly. They had sent my first transfer as they had promised. I was so excited to have gotten the news. I remember I left whatever I was doing and started planning how I would use the money to change my life.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying iron sheets, building poles, nails, and timber. I plan to use them to construct a new spacious permanent house. Previously I used to sleep under a grass thatched house that leaked a lot during the rainy season. I am glad that once I finish building the new house, I will no longer be rained on during the winter seasons. I later bought a pair of oxen at KES 30000. I believe the pair will be of great help to me especially in my farming activities because the harvests will now increase since I will be able to cultivate a larger area of land compared to when I could do the tilling on my own. In addition to that, I also paid school fees for my children who are still in primary school. I spent the remaining amount of money to buy enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A decent house for my family is what receiving this money means to me. At the moment, l am living in a small, leaking and grass thatched house which is our kitchen and is used at the sometime as a gallery, we were forced to move to this structure after our house collapsed 2 years ago. Am planning to spend my first transfer in constructing a decent house for my family a change that I have longed for.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of the day because it is at this time that I can relax from my days struggle of life. I normally meet my children when they come back from school and probably share meals with them when lack is on my side after selling the poles.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Living in a small and leaking grass thatched house has been my greatest challenge in life. My dream has been to have a good one but I have not accomplish this due to financial challenges. Currently, l am depending on my house who sales building pole a job that is unpredictable and earns him less than 1 USD per day. This income normal is spend on food leaving none to cater for other family needs.
