"I am the father of four beautiful kids, two of whom are in school. I am the only provider because my wife is currently unemployed. I run a little business that buys and sells charcoal in the marketplace. I went to my in-laws' house after obtaining my second transfer to give a $250 dowry for my wife. My children's school tuition had piled to $50, so I had to pay it in order for them to continue their education. I spent $100 on some furnishings and utensils in addition to new clothing for my family to replace the old, worn-out ones. I replenished my supply of food and consumables with the remaining $130, and I also set aside some for daily use."

"We have been residing in a one-room house with a partition separating the sleeping area from the kitchen, together with my wife and one child. I want to build a larger home this year, ideally one with two rooms so my family can live comfortably. Also, I want to get at least two dairy cows so I may milk them at home and sell the milk to my neighbors."

"I used to sleep on the floor since I could not afford to buy a bed and mattress. It became worse when I was diagnosed with chest and breathing complications. I could no longer have a peaceful sleep as my health deteriorated. When I received my second transfer I bought a bed and mattress. My son Richard was born with a disability in his hand making him unable to work and provide for the family. I am left with the responsibility of taking care of his three sons Kiprotich, Kiplangat, and Kipkurui. I budgeted KES 20000 to buy them clothing and bedding. I also paid for their school fees."

"I was not lucky to buy cattle with this transfer due to my pressing need of building a new home for my family. We are buying milk expensively and this is making our cost of living high. I am planning to start saving money to enable me to buy a dairy cow for my family. This will save us a lot as we produce milk for domestic use."

"I can attest that education is expensive, especially in the developing world. I can recount the assets that I even sold to fund the education of my two sons and a daughter at a University. This brought me back in terms of development and even cut short my dream of building a better house for my family of six. When I received GiveDirectly's transfers, I was torn between building a better house or paying school fees for my children. I choose peace of mind for my children and decided to pay school fees for them to avoid being sent home to fetch school arrears. I am now working hard to save money and rejuvenate my dream of building a better and more spacious home for my family."

"My dream was to build a new kitchen. I was feeling embarrassed and disappointed every moment I was cooking. It is expected that food should be cooked in a clean and neat environment but that remained a wish for me. I never had the financial muscle to build a better kitchen. Having received my second transfer, I used KES 40000 to build an iron sheet thatched roof kitchen. This has made me calm and enjoy cooking. My last-born daughter Mercy was sitting for her diploma exam and was required to pay KES 6000 examination fees. This money helped me pay her examination fees without struggle."

"When I received my first transfer, I was able to build a main house for my family. Having built a main house, I saw the need to build a kitchen house for my family once I received my second transfer. We had for a long time lived in a single grass thatched house that had its roof leaking. I had not enough money to be able to do this since I normally rely on odd casual jobs to make some income that helps me support my family. I make hardly $2 per day that may be just enough to make ends meet and nothing to save for such huge projects. I am so happy that with this transfers, I have been able to build both houses and made my life and that of my children better. I used $150 to build the kitchen and the remaining amount was used to buy a dairy cow. These investments have greatly changed my life and I can only look forward to doing more business with the savings that I am going to make from m y casual work. I am more concerned about starting a grocery business that will help me meet the needs of my family quite easily."

"As it is true that all that has a beginning always has its end, I know that GiveDictly's program will soon come to an end. Therefore, I have a goal of prioritizing some investments. Since the most viable venture in our region is livestock keeping, I aim to buy additional two goats this year. When they increase in number after a given period, I shall be able to have some source of income. It will be simple for me to start raising cows after selling some goats. In addition, I want to build a kitchen so that my kids may have a place to hang out when they become older in addition to using it for cooking."

"When I received my second transfer of $550, I used $450 to buy a piece of land. I had managed to save some amount from the first transfer and I also had other savings from a savings plan that I joined within the village. I combined all the money that I got from the merry go round contribution and the second transfer and bought the piece of land. I made a decision to buy a piece of land since we have been staying in a very small piece of land that I bought with my own money in the recent past. My desire was to get some extra money and expand the said piece of land and be able to advance my agricultural activities such as poultry keeping and even dairy keeping. I normally run a small business that would not allow me to do such mega investments since the amount of money that I make from the said business would provide me with just enough to feed my family and probably pay school fees for one of my children who just concluded her secondary school studies. I then used an amount that I was left with of almost $100 to clear school fees for one of my children who has just concluded her secondary school studies. I am looking forward to making more money and being in a position to buy an extra piece of land too."
