"One month down the line I would have built a kitchen worth $160 and spend another $100 towards completion of my main house. I am also planning to revive a shop business that collapsed thanks to over dependency. This is going to cost $200 while an investment in a dairy cow will cost me another $300. These are income generating activities that will supplement my wife's teaching salary to sustain our household needs. This is also going to secure a good academic foundation for our children."

"When my employer's wife passed on due to kidney failure, I assumed her responsibility to take care of their children. My employer says that I should buy a piece of land worth $400 and spend another $200 to build a house. Receiving this money is the beginning of freedom, independence thanks to land ownership rights. "My biggest hardship is having limited land for farming. Besides that, where we are staying currently is someones land and I believe that he will displace us some time to come. Limited land has made us not to have enough food in the house because there are few gardens that we have been given to cultivate."

"Since the year 2009, we have been unable to harvest enough maize for both consumption and commercial purpose due to an infestation by unknown disease. Initially, we used to harvest around 10 sacks of maize in our 1.5 acre of land which was sufficient to sustain us both for domestic use and to meet School expenses. The 10 sacks of maize which we used to harvest was reduced to only 2 sacks which is hardly enough for consumption leave alone meeting the School expenses. Therefore, the biggest hardship has been lack of enough School fees to cater for our two school going children which costs us around 1,000 USD a year."

Kauchi
received a $540 initial payment.
"The transfer has enabled me to purchase enough building materials for constructing my new house. I recently bought iron sheets and building poles. I have been living in an old hut which was not safe at all. It was even worse during the heavy rains because it would soak everything hence forcing us to seek shelter from our neighbors. Though my hope was to upgrade to a better house, I did not have adequate resources to accomplish this. When I received transfers from GiveDireclty, I was now able to build a decent iron-roofed house. To me, this is the biggest dream I have ever met. I can't believe I will never bear the shame of asking for shelter during winter. Give Directly has really saved me and I can't thank them enough."

"I received a message notification early that morning. When I checked what it was all about, I realized it was from GiveDirectly. I was filled with happiness because I was not sure they were genuine. The money came as a surprise. It was hard to believe that someone could actually send you money without demanding for a refund in this era. Receiving this financial support was the greatest miracle I yearned for. At least I was now in a position to attain my long term goals and improve my living standards"

Tom
received a $522 second payment.
"Currently, my life has really taken a different shape since I have a whole acre of sugar cane plantation that is under my name which makes a huge difference. I am sure of a good harvest that will translate to a good income as well. Before I could dream of achieving my goals but the best I ever had was casual jobs which its earnings were meager hence could barely serve for my day to day household expenses . This brought about conflict with my spouse who felt I was not doing extra in order to make their life comfortable . Today, we are staying harmoniously since there is no longer much struggles on buying food and taking care of my family's daily needs. Thanks to GiveDirectly."

Kazungu
received a $522 second payment.
"My main occupation has been farming and because of the harsh climate it has been disadvantaged in terms of getting lumpsum yields to sell and consume in my household . Therefore in the previous past, I have been living a life full of worries because my income was meager hence providing for my family was a challenge meaning I could survive on debts which sometime I took long before settling them. GiveDirectly's transfer has brought a bigger change in my life because I have settled all debts which makes me happy and peaceful. I also bought four goats and I am very optimistic that with their high rate a reproduction after a short period of time . I shall be able to sale some in exchange of buying a cow since benefits that a cow gives is much higher than goats but all in all, there has to be somewhere that one starts from. I believe by keeping these livestock getting extra cash will be easier hence I would not struggle much in providing for my family . Secondly, I am happy that I am able to provide proper meals for my family since I was able to stock food."

Mercy
received a $522 second payment.
"My life is different than it would have been if I never received this money in that l finally completed paying a piece of land which I have yearned to buy for a while now . Before,my mother in law offered us a small piece of land when we did not have a place to put our heads. This money came at the right time because my husband who is a caretaker and I were already struggling to provide for my family's day to day needs as well as raising money to buy a piece of land because their was a need to expand it to have space where we could build a house for our children to sleep in since they are now grown up and they need a separate place to sleep as the customs states. I am happy and peaceful since that the transfer has lifted this burden at long last."

John
received a $39 twelfth payment.
"I topped up 3000KES to the recent transfer and started a different kind of business. I sell all types of socks. Previously, I was selling kales. I was not making more profits mostly because I had to transport it from home hence using an extra fee and the nature of the kales which are perishable made me lose money at times. Many people were into this business too. The business that I started recently is a good one because not many people are into it. The weather is also cold and favorable for this market."
