"I expect my life in the next six months to have greatly changed. I expect to have invested more in farming thus will engage more in my piece of land than on hard and low paying casual jobs I currently do. I expect good crops on the farm thus will be hopeful of having a better harvest which translates to enough food in our family and surpluses to sell to meet other needs."

"My biggest hardship is my ill health. In November 2018 I was diagnosed with chronic tuberculosis which totally immobilized me. I could no longer work as I was on complete bed rest. I have spent a lot of money to get treatment which has landed me in debt too. Even my house fell as a result of heavy rainfall but I could not rebuild and have been forced to sleep in a shade for the past 4 months. Though my condition has significantly improved, am still on medicine and have not resumed work."

"My biggest hardship is lack of finances to keep my children in school. I'm a stay at home mum depending on my eldest son to provide for me and his siblings. This has been a huge financial burden on him especially the secondary school fees for his brother. His brother has had to skip school a few times for lack of fees."

"Receiving this money means food security in my home. I plan to purchase oxen and an ox plough at a cost of 48,000 shillings to expand my farming hence increasing my yields. To top it, I will invest in a livestock trading business which is quite a lucrative deal in our area to earn extra income for the family for education and other financial needs."

"My husband and I never went to school and this has negatively impacted our life. There is no way we can get quality jobs and the much we can offer is casual labour. It is hard to earn enough from these jobs thus making it difficult to take care of our children. The most hurtful thing is that I cannot even raise 1400 shillings for their academics. I believe all this suffering is as a result of illiteracy which I consider my biggest hardship."

"My single roomed house is not spacious enough to accommodate my family of 6. This has forced 3 of my children to seek shelter in our neighbor's house. Being a parent I am not comfortable since I fear so much about their security. Besides, I am afraid they might get exposed to immoral behavior that can affect their social life. Therefore, my desire is to construct a better house that will accommodate my entire family. This means I will be able to protect them well as supervise their behaviour."

"When I bought a dairy cow. I reduced the number of menial jobs that I had been doing, working for others in order to put food on the table. Instead of toiling to get money for milk and other foodstuffs, I have started to produce the milk on my farm from the dairy cow. I also sell part of the milk and use it to buy other foodstuffs that we need as a household. Having an income is a path that has saved me. My life is better now with cattle than before. I f I had not received the money from GiveDirectly, I would still be suffering having to work for other people."

"My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I paid school fees for my children on time and they were not sent home. This could have been so challenging for me because I depend on small scale farming at home to earn an income."
