"Would you imagine surviving on a 0.1 acre piece of land which is expected to feed a family of 7? As an unmarried woman in my culture, I do not have right to ownership of land. When I got divorced this is the only piece of land given to me under the mercies of my mother. I use the land to plant maize and is still a grazing land for my cow. I have 3 children in school and my greatest worry is that their fees is going to overwhelm me especially that they are joining secondary school next year."

"For a long time the roofing on my kitchen has been leaking and uncomfortable to stay in during rainy season. It has been a challenge to my children who sleep there. They have a hard time concentrating in school the following day due to insufficient sleep. Receiving this money will enable me to install a new corrugated iron sheet roofing at a cost of 108 usd. This is going to make my children proud of their home and have a life of dignity that they deserve."

"I no longer feel very comfortable sleeping in my brother's house because I do not have the freedom I need as a teenager, hence the need to construct my own house once I complete high school. This may be tough because I do not have any source of income, but I hope I will have achieved this dream within the next six months with the help of the transfers I receive from Give Directly and through casual jobs."

"Inadequate financial resource to achieve my desire of educating my children and starting a food vending business is my biggest hardship in my life. Being a widow and jobless after the death of my husband in August this year has left me with a huge role, something that is eating up my mind because I am worried that my children might not complete their education."

"Failure to meet my longterm dream of owning livestock due to financial instability has been the biggest hardship in my life. This has forced me to rear my neighbor's livestock in order to sustain my family's needs. This job is tiresome and earns me very little, considering that getting 1.5 dollars per day means spending the own day in the bush herding the livestock."

"My husband is a skilled motorcyclist with over 10 years experience in riding a motorbike to ferry charcoal to Mombasa from the village. The business is very lucrative in that on a good day he manages to earn close to ksh.1500 if he goes for three trips. The problem is that he does not have his own and as such he is forced to rely on being employed by someone who has to put his skill into use. For a very long time , he has wished to buy his own so that he can be independent and start saving the standard ksh.400 that he has to give to his employer everyday regardless of wether he makes an earning or not. However, this wish has always been derailed by lack of finances to buy his own and also go for the driving test to acquire a legal license permitting him to ride freely without having to evade the police from time to time. With this money he will spend ksh.13,000 to acquire his drivers licence and ksh.60,000 to get a second hand motorbike that he has already identified and certified to be in good working condition. With his own income,I am sure that our households finances will greatly improve thus changing our way of living which is currently very pathetic to be a bit comfortable and free from constant financial worries. "I saw the message notification early in that morning as I was attending to my daily activities. As I went through the messages later that day, I came across the only message that I have been anxiously waiting for. It was a Mpesa message indicating that money had been sent to my account. I very well knew it was from GiveDirectly because they had promised to send us that month. I was greatly overjoyed as I thanked this organization for keeping their word and giving us that much without any conditions."

"We had acquired a motorcycle on loan from which we were paying in instalments from the income it generates. It was my expectation that we complete paying for this loan so as to have full possession of it. However, the outstanding balance was huge compared to the daily income we were getting from its services that we needed to support our daily household needs and to service the loan. I thank GiveDirectly because the transfer has reduced this loan to a considerable amount. I am happy because clearing the remaining amount won't be a big task for us. To me, this is the biggest difference in my daily life because I am sure it won't take us long to gain full ownership and getting our own income daily to meet our household needs and educating our children through it."

"I am a business woman who buys and sells milk.Depending on this one business has been a challenge because of varying seasons.I therefore want to open a retail shop when I receive this money.I believe this business will pick because my target customers are the ones that I buy milk from.I will build a structure in my farm since it is strategically located beside the road. This will save me the expense of paying rent. The cost of building and buying stock will cost me Ksh 40,000(400 USD).My husband is also a business man and part of the money will go to his business. He sells firewood to schools.I also want to fence my compound using mesh wire so that I can rear chicken."
