"My work at the moment is to transport charcoal from our village up to Mombasa twice in a week. Since I don't own the bike, I am forced to hire from my friend and this means my income is shared equally. Considering that I am the sole breadwinner for my family, this income is very low and sometimes we skip meals or borrow from my relatives something that I find to be shaming me. Therefore, I consider the lack of a stable source of income as my biggest hardship."

"Being a widow with 4 children to take care of can be a big burden especially when there is no reliable source of income and this has forced me to engage in charcoal burning or aloe vera extraction. The earning from these activities are very low or inconsistent and this means failing to provide even some very basic needs like food and shelter for my family. Therefore, financial instability is generally the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life."

"A woman in our village is considered to be doing household chores like cooking, fetching firewood and water plus other household duties. This is very different when it comes to me because most of the men dominated jobs like charcoal burning are what I have been doing in my life. Despite this job being tiresome and time-consuming, its income is always very low and it can not fully cater to my basic needs. Therefore, the lack of a stable source of income is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life."

"I am widow who has 4 sons who are in secondary school. Paying for their school fees has not been easy. I work as a casual laborer. This job earns me 400 shillings in a day. This can not sustain all our needs especially the school fees,. My son is the one who has been struggling to support his siblings. He works as a teacher. Also his salary is not enough.I am planning to spend all the transfer to clear all the fees arrears. This will give them room to study with ease because they will not be sent to collect fees. I hope that they will pass and proceed to a university. Once they attain their certificates, they will be employed and support our family in the future."

"I am a housewife who depends on my husband. My wish has been to build a semi-permanent house but due to financial challenges, this dream has never come to pass. I am planning to spend 80,000 shillings to construct it. This will restore my dignity and we leave comfortable. My neighbor has been making jokes that I can not even own a house. because currently, I have been staying in a small house which is almost collapsing. Other than that, I will use the extra amount to purchase beddings. We have been using local beddings made of strings that are uncomfortable to sleep on."
