"Besides subsistence farming, we burn charcoal for a living. This job earns us around 2500 shillings a month or less. The amount is so little that it cannot meet our needs fully. Food insecurity has become part and parcel of us because we do not have enough money to buy from shops when our yields run out. It is this same situation that made my children miss secondary education since I couldn't afford school fees. I can therefore say, lack of enough money is our biggest hardship."

"My current work that I can consider as a source of income is working on my neighbor's farm to get pay, usually 200 shillings per day when luck is on my side. This situation has rendered me inactive on my farm and consequently low harvest. Therefore, the amount I get on each day only provides hardly enough to my family. Hence the biggest hardships I have faced in my life is insufficient funds."

However, I am currently attaining relatively low income since I have to share whatever I attain with members of a group that we all co-own the equipment. Hence, receiving this money means that my family shall be earning more revenue from the same project because I will purchase all the necessary equipment, and operate independently."

"I lost my wife when my children were still young. She succumbed to a relatively short ailment. Accordingly, I had to do away with the casual job I was doing by then to come and care for my young kids. Even so, I have been struggling to ensure that my children are fairing on well. Nonetheless, we all feel the gap that she (my wife) left. Overall, her death serves as the biggest hardship we have faced as a family."

"Since I do not have a formal job, receiving this money means that my dream project of rearing poultry for commercial purposes shall materialize. Precisely, I will utilize the money on building a poultry structure and acquiring some birds and their feeds. I would choose poultry farming since I find that there exists a ready and nearby market for mature birds. Eventually, we shall be enjoying high income, and thus leading a better lifestyle as a family."

"I have been struggling to provide and care for my extended family since most of my children do not have formal education or any reliable sources of income. As such, receiving this money means that I shall afford to build a better and larger house for my family since the one we are currently living in is too small. The two-roomed house cannot comfortably accommodate the relatively many grandchildren who frequently visit us."
