"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I can now comfortably do farming due to lack of water. Before, I used to plant onions which used to take longer time to ripen than required due to lack of water because our place is a dry terrain. The chicken layers have acted as a quick of source of income as compared to before when I could hardly get."

"My desire is to own my house because the current house I am living in is not spacious enough to accommodate me with my two co-wives which have forced me to spend the night in a kitchen while sleeping on the floor. When I receive the money I will use 40,000 Kenya shillings to build a two-roomed house which will accommodate my family and also it can regain my privacy and dignity which I have lost for long. I also intend to use 30,000 Kenya shilling to buy a bed and high-density mattress so that I can sleep comfortably. The remaining amount I will use it to pay school fees for my children when school resume."

"My daughter completed her secondary education in the year 2017 and she managed to get a mean grade of C+ which she had been praying for a long. Her ambition was to do a nursing course but due to scarce resources she has not yet fulfilled it. I have always wished that she fulfill her ambition so that she can be dependable in her future life and even support us. When I receive the money I will use 80,000 Kenya shillings to pay for her school fees so that she can be able to fulfil her desires. I will use the remaining amount on my daily basic needs such as food and clothing."

Mwenda
received a $500 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on buying building materials to construct a new house. My old house collapsed and I could not rebuild it due to lack of financial resources. I purchased building materials such as iron sheets and building poles for the construction of the new house. I am happy to live in a new home. I also paid for the labour cost involved. In addition to this, I also spent KES 15000 on buying a heifer. I am keeping it because in the near future, it will reproduce and have many of them. I can readily sell the offspring to help me in case of a financial need."

Karembo
received a $500 initial payment.
"I spent part of the first transfer on buying mattresses and bed to replace the old ones we have been using. They were old and worn out. At least we now have good beddings to sleep on as a family. I am planning to spend the remaining amount to buy building materials to construct a house for my children. They are sheltering in the neighbourhood at night which is not good for them because they are still young. They will now have their own house. I am also spending the money on buying daily foodstuffs for my family."

"As a farmer,it is very discouraging when I cultivate and plant my farm only to get little or no harvest. I depend on crop farming as a source of livelihood but long dry spells in this region has made it so difficult for me. Lack of rains lead to low crop production and lack of water for domestic use. The last harvest for example saw me get 7 sacks of corn from 5 acres of land. This is very little given that my children need food as well as other needs."

"I lost 9 cows at a go in 2013 to a disease called the East Coast Fever. These cows were the source of our livelihood. We could sell milk and make $100 a month. My children even when they were in high school never had a problem with school fees because of the money I used to make from these cows. Immediately they died life changed for the worst and since then I have been going through the biggest hardship in my life."
