"My grass thatched house is very tiny for me,my husband and my seven children. Receiving this money will enable me to build a two roomed house with an iron sheet roof. This will cost me approximately 300 USD. I will then use 100 USD for paying school fees for my children come January when schools re open. Part of the money will go into other needs such as food and clothing which has been a big struggle for me."

"My house is in a bad condition. The walls have collapsed and the iron sheets leak. This makes us very uncomfortable especially during the rainy season. I am now glad that I can budget 300 USD to build a decent house with two rooms. I also plan on buying 4 goats at a cost of 120 USD. With goats, they multiply very fast and they are easy to rear. I will then set aside 50 USD for paying school fees for my daughter who is in primary school."

"My ambition has been to start a small shop within our village because we currently have very few so it forces people to go far to buy some commondotities.Starting up a shop will attract customers thus will have an extra income. When I receive the money I will start by venturing on this project by using 80,000 Kenya shillings as a starting capital. The remaining amount I will save so that I can pay school fees for my children when school resume."

"I spent KES 34000 of my first transfer on buying a pair of oxen to help me in my farming. I used to hire from neighbours which was costly during the planting season. For the first time now, I will use my own oxen to plough my farm. I will be preparing my farm timely unlike before for a good harvest. In addition to this, I also bought some iron sheets, building poles and nails to construct a house for my children. They are out of age and having their own house will make them enjoy their own privacy."

"I was going about asking for money to pay my daughter's school fees who was just about to sit for exams and failure to pay the money, she would not be allowed to do the exams. I sent the balance to her immediately I received the transfer as she was left with only two days. I had a house that had stalled and sleeping in it was very cold. Right now, I have assembled materials that will help me complete the construction of the house."

"I spent my first transfer on buying some building materials to finish a project of building a new house. I had begun this project before we were visited by GiveDirectly. However, it came to a halt when materials got depleted and I could not readily purchase any. Through this transfer, I bought coral blocks, cement and other materials to finish the construction. I also paid for the labour involved, purchased a door and windows. I am grateful to GiveDirectly because very soon I will be moving into my new house."

"In the year 2019, there was extensive drought in this place. I couldn't farm like any other year and it is farming that I usually depend much on. This affected my income and two of my children had to defer studies. I was so worried about their future I had no peace of mind."

"I have been working as a driver for the last 15 years and that's what has been sustaining my family. When COVID-19 struck Kenya in March 2020, my employer couldn't travel anymore because of the restrictions that came with the pandemic and therefore he didn't need a driver anymore. I lost my job just like that and to make matters worse is that two of my children are set to join high school next year. The amount of school fees that's needed is not less than US$600 for them to successfully join high school. I have been worried that they might be forced to leave school and come home to do farming with me but now that Give Directly have come am sure that come next year they'll be in school."

"I have been married for the last two years and I and my wife have not been able to bear a child. Every time she gets pregnant a miscarriage occurs towards the end of the pregnancy. With that, we have lost two pregnancies in the last two years. We really desire to have a child and be happy like other couples because the ridicule and stigma we have gone through in this community is too much to bear. There's a time I even wished to relocate from this place and go to a place where we can be accepted. The medical care that we have been receiving in a local government dispensary is not comprehensive and the nurses have been advising us to find a specialist which is way too expensive for us to pay. I am now happy that Give Directly will bring these transfers to this household so that we can seek advanced special healthcare for us."
