How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different in that the transfer helped me to accomplish the financial goals that seemed impossible to me. I am currently owning livestock which include goats and a heifer. These are living assets which I can readily rely on in case of a dire financial need. I would not be owning these living assets if I was to buy them at my own cost. The transfer also helped me to improve my house which had been built with mud and not stable enough. I renovated it with bricks made of cement and sand and its now more permanent. Apart from renovating the house, I can now afford to sleep comfortably since I purchased a new bed and a mattress to replace the old and worn out mats that I have been using for years.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in reducing the poverty that we were in. Through the unconditional transfers, we can attest that our lives have changed drastically. At least we can now afford the very basic necessities to life like food and good shelter without struggle. We also own livestock which are part of our precious assets. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a bigger portion of my second transfer on renovating my living house. I purchased building materials which include cement and sand to make bricks. My previous house was built with mud and I needed to improve it so that it would be more permanent. I am glad that I managed to accomplish this through the transfers and it now looks decent and permanent unlike before the renovation. In addition to this, I also purchased a heifer which I am currently keeping in my homestead. I am expecting it to reproduce and increase in number. I will be getting milk for my family's consumption and sell the surplus and get some money to cater for my basic needs like food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received a message early in the morning. Since I could not comprehend its contents, my helper informed me of the good news that I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was greatly overjoyed because now my life would be transformed through this transfer. I thanked them for the support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has enabled me to build a new iron roofed house. I was forced to shelter in my grandson's small house after mine collapsed some months ago. I am old and I had no plan of building another house because of financial constraints. I am at peace now that I have my own house, which makes it to be the biggest difference in my daily life. It would have taken a long time if I was to build at my own cost.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying building materials to construct a new house. My old house collapsed and I could not rebuild it due to lack of financial resources. I purchased building materials such as iron sheets and building poles for the construction of the new house. I am happy to live in a new home. I also paid for the labour cost involved. In addition to this, I also spent KES 15000 on buying a heifer. I am keeping it because in the near future, it will reproduce and have many of them. I can readily sell the offspring to help me in case of a financial need.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a new house house. My current house's roof was blown away by strong winds, forcing me to seek shelter in my grandson's house. This has been my life for the past one year and I am not happy about it. Besides, I will purchase goats for rearing and sell them to generate income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. I feel healthy and energetic during this time. I enjoy that feeling because it is short lived and I tend to get tired easily, once I perform even the lightest task.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My old age is accompanied by poor health that has made me less productive in terms of work. I have constant pains in my pelvis that make it very hard to bend. Recently, my leg suffered from mysterious inflammation that immobilized me for 3 weeks. I therefore depend mostly on my children who are casual labourers. Life is very unbearable since they do not earn enough to sustain us. In this regard, I consider financial instability is my biggest hardship.
