"When I was about 10 years old, I dropped out of primary school because my parents could not afford a fee requirement of $3, which was needed to aid payment of teachers. When I dropped out, I had to engage in casual jobs in the village to help my parents with putting food on the table. As a result of not having an education certificate, I cannot get any decent employment due to disqualification. Accordingly, this has made it difficult providing my family of 5."

"The biggest difference in my daily life that I can proudly mention is that I am now a proud owner of a decent iron-roofed house. It has been my desire to construct one for so many years but I could not afford it because of the poverty life that stricken my household. Therefore I had no option other than to stay under a small grass-thatched house that was so leaky. My children were always attacked by pneumonia and asthma as a result of the cold nights since the house had some cracks on all the walls. It was also the same house that we used as a kitchen and so the smoke could make my children suffocate as well. I am now a happy father because the transfers enable me to transform positively. My new house is spacious enough, with some well-plastered walls and we no longer complain about all the sufferings we went through. Courtesy of GiveDirectly."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now sleep in a better spacious house. Before the coming of GiveDirecty, I used to live in a small hut with a grass thatched roof. It was so hectic because whenever it could rain I had to seek shelter together with my children. Since I am a widow and a breadwinner I depended on casual jobs, I was not able to get the required money to purchase the materials to construct a decent one. Therefore I had no option other than to stay in the harsh environment which really affected my children's academic life. They could not even do their school assignments at night becasue the house was very small. I am now a proud and happy parent becasue I managed to construct a good house whereby we no longer have to worry about the rains and my children's performance."

"Imagine being a widow at my young age of 22 years! It is the worst thing that I have ever faced in my life. My husband passed away when I was 8 months pregnant and this changed the whole story of my bright future to darkness. I am now forced to assume the role of being the household breadwinner to take care of my daughter. The income I get from the M-Pesa business is not enough to sustain my needs and sometimes I feel stressed. I am now a happy person knowing that I will be able to own an M-Pesa shop. All this courtesy of GiveDirectly."

"The lack of a reliable source of income is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life. Imagine being a widow with no stable business yet I have a son in college! It's a very stressful moment for me. This situation has forced me to visit many offices in search of help and at some point, I feel like a burden to the well-wishers. I am now a happy person after knowing that, my son will complete his studies with ease, courtesy of GiveDirectly."

Ronoh
received a $516 initial payment.
"For quite sometime, I have been trying to save towards buying materials for constructing a better house but it wasn't possible for me to do so because of low income from casual jobs. When I got my first transfer, I prioritize on what I was yearning for. I bought construction materials at a cost of KES 20000. I then bought a heifer for rearing at a cost of KES 25000. The remaining amount, I spent KES 2000 on paying a debt and the rest on buying myself some clothes."

"As it was my routine, I woke up and headed to my farm after breakfast. At around 9 o'clock, I received a message notification. Upon checking it's content, I was felt with joy as I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy having received such a huge amount at the middle of a pandemic when I was struggling financially."

"Receiving the transfer was a great turn of events in our household. It brought back the hope of owning back our small piece of land which was up for sale at that period. We were really thankful that we would at least see our debts settled once more, and extra cash to visit the hospital for a check-up after ensuring that all the household goods were in place."
