How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since I do not have prospects of getting money soon I have not set any goal that I can accomplish once I get some money. I usually set goals if I see some potentials of getting some cash. This has been my way of living since I like being real to myself; I am not comfortable to set goals without means of getting money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is an unforgettable organization. Through the sensitizations it made to us followed by registration thereafter we received the transfers followed by constant calls from the officers; it has made me to live to remember this organization. All those processes mentioned guided me to utilize the money well by constructing a good spacious house with the first transfer and this served as a mark for GiveDirectly hence will keep on remembering the organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before withdrawing the money, I had already set the plan on how best I would utilize it. Upon withdrawal, I took KES 30000.00 and paid school fees for my three children. Two are in secondary school and one is in primary school. The reason for opting to settle the school fees issue is that, my children have been on and off school for a while due to the same but now I am glad that I settled them for the remaining terms of the academic year. Thereafter, I bought some clothes for my children and used the remaining amount for the family basic needs such as food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 AM when I was from the dam fetching watcher then I heard my mobile phone ringing continuously. I was so curious and without wasting time I asked my helper to check what the message was all about. Upon checking, he realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and thanked God for such a blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now sleep in a better spacious house. Before the coming of GiveDirecty, I used to live in a small hut with a grass thatched roof. It was so hectic because whenever it could rain I had to seek shelter together with my children. Since I am a widow and a breadwinner I depended on casual jobs, I was not able to get the required money to purchase the materials to construct a decent one. Therefore I had no option other than to stay in the harsh environment which really affected my children's academic life. They could not even do their school assignments at night becasue the house was very small. I am now a proud and happy parent becasue I managed to construct a good house whereby we no longer have to worry about the rains and my children's performance.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a large portion of my first transfer on buying some building poles, iron sheets, timber and nails, and a wooden door. This was purposely for the construction of a new house since the previous one was a very small temporary hut. During the winter season, it was so hectic and most of my properties were not safe at all. I later paid the masson KES 5000 as his labor fees in regards to the job well done. To add that, I bought enough foodstuff for my children that would at least take us to the next three weeks.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For the past 5 years I have never had a decent shelter after my house collapsed due to heavy downpour. This forced me to shelter in my son's house who resorted to sleep in a friend's house for my sake. Since I could maintain the roof because it is grass thatched it also collapsed. Currently I live in a very small single roomed house that serves both as a bedroom and as a kitchen. Receiving this money therefore means building a better house for my family. Besides, I will clear part of my son's pending school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am very stressed person every time I think of how difficult it is to educate my children. This has put me in a state of unhappiness and the only time I am happy is when I earn something. This occurs mostly in the evening making it the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being a widow has never been easy since I am the sole provider of the family. To make ends meet I rely on burning charcoal and other casual jobs. The much I earn is 200 shillings a week an amount that is supposed to cater for our needs as well as pay school fees for my sons. Life is very difficult and it is common for them to be sent home at least every week. If all comes to worse, I take firewood to their school to clear part of the arrears. All these problems are attributed to lack of enough finances which is my biggest hardship.
