"Receiving this money means getting a decent house. Currently I am living in a small house which is too small to accommodate me and my family. I have a family of seven children. Three of them are teenagers. This forces them to look for a shelter from neighbors because we cannot spend in the same room. consequently, this has made some of my neighbors to laugh and look down upon me as a failure. I used to live in a two bedroom house but it collapsed last year. Since then I have not been able to construct one due to lack of money. I have been surviving through charcoal burning which earns me $.20 a month that can only enable us afford food.I intend to use the first transfer to construct a three bedroom house that will cost roughly $ 300 so that my children can have shelter under my roof. I will then use the remaining amount to buy livestock as an investment for my children's education."

"Imagine being a widow and the only breadwinner for my family of 7, it has been a very difficult life to me since in most cases I fail to provide some of our basic needs like food and better education for the children. I usually depend on casual jobs to earn me $3 per day and this cannot sustain our needs. Therefore, the lack of a reliable source of income is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life"

Katsele
received a $509 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that the transfers empowered me to send my daughter to school. In the last few weeks, she has been staying home because of the fee arrears that had accumulated for months. This has been demoralizing her and I as a parent but then I had no option because I had no assets that I could seel to cater to her education. I depended on the odd jobs which on a productive day, I could earn KES 200 which was still not enough for their daily upkeep leave alone the fees. Therefore paying her fees on time has always been a challenge and at times she used to say that someday she would drop out of school and seek some casual jobs. This was really breaking me because my dream was for her to get a good education that will change her future and her generation in particular. GiveGirectly made this happen because manage to snd her to school and I also bought few goats that will still facilitate her education journey."

"My biggest hardship has been financial constraints. It has been hard paying for their school fees. I once bought a power saw but it broke down. So we do farming but it has since then been unpredictable with weather changes."

"The biggest hardship I have faced was the year 2019 from June ,when I had a very sicky child ,and without a coin in pocket for his treatment and also had no food in my house! My husband had gone far where he was burning charcoal and there was no ready market to sell them. He spent six months without sending us anything ! I was about to starve with my family and the child was very sick. Its time I faced hardship of which I cannot forget in my life."

"The biggest hardship is financial constraints. The little money i get from casual jobs can only feed my family and sometimes it's even hard to find one. I have always wished to make investment so as to generate more income."
