Fiath
received a $146 initial payment.
"Two days after receiving my first transfer, I went to a nearby shopping center, where I collected the entire amount and spent $10 on drugs for my goats. I spent $170 on iron sheets, 7 timber, 6 frames, and $10 on transportation because I needed to build a new house, which is still in progress. I started the construction the next day after paying the $40 labor charge. I have always lived in a small house with my family of seven, and because I am the second wife in a polygamous family, my husband has not helped much with the construction work because he has responsibilities in the other household. I am yet to finish the construction and will move in once I have obtained all of the necessary construction materials."

Bildad
received a $162 initial payment.
"I used $100 of my first transfer to purchase two. Goats. We live in a drought-prone area where irrigation facilitates farming, and raising goats is a better plan that can be implemented cheaply. I am currently living on my friend's property because I am unable to purchase my own. With the livestock project I'm currently launching, I hope to sell the goats after they've been bred in order to purchase some land. I spent $80 to help my spouse's clothing business grow. She's been selling them around the village, and the profits have helped me buy household goods with the money I have earned from my construction work. I also spent the remaining $20 on food for my current two-person family."

Douglas
received a $162 initial payment.
"I am grateful that I was able to prepare my acre of land for plantation after receiving the first transfer from GiveDirectly. I bought butternut seed for $50 and paid labor charges during the plantation after blowing my piece of land with the first $50. My farm, as well as the farms of other villagers, are now irrigated thanks to a county government initiative that has aided us throughout the severe drought. I also put $30 toward the hire-purchase of a solar panel and lighting equipment. Since then, I have been making daily payments of $1, which will continue for the next year. I now have a well-lit home with security lights that have reduced wild animal attachment to livestock. In addition, I spent the remaining funds on household food items for my family of two."

Cosmas
received a $146 initial payment.
"Improved agricultural practices on my leased land, as well as the growing poultry project after purchasing 8 chickens, have made the most difference since receiving my first transfer. At the moment, I am confident that a better harvest will ensure food security for my family of three. I am grateful for the irrigation pipes channeled to our lands as part of the government project, which have greatly aided us during the current droughts."

Melvin
received a $162 initial payment.
"I used $80 of my first transfer to lease a plot of land that is currently under beans plantation. We have a small family farm that is insufficient for both cultivation and livestock farming because we have goats to raise. I rolled a $50 and later harrowed the land. I was fortunate to receive certified bean seeds from a charity organization that distributes seeds only to farmers who have a plot of land to grow them on. Furthermore, I spent $20 on labor during planting and am looking forward to weeding them when I receive the second transfer. The seed company's education, which has so far been visited twice since we planted, has been beneficial, and I am hopeful that I will have a better harvest at the end of the season. I also purchased other farm inputs, such as pesticides, and set aside $20 for subsequent management practices. I spent the remaining $3 on food for my family of six, which we ate for a month before running out."

Regina
received a $146 initial payment.
"I received my first transfer around 4:30 p.m. on a Wednesday, informed by a message notification that I could not understand at first after reading through it. I received three phone calls from close friends who had received the same transfer and had already confirmed the message's authenticity. I was at my farm at the time and had to return home to tell my husband, who was overjoyed. We were unable to collect the funds on the same day, but transferred some to pay a portion of my children's school bills before withdrawing the remainder the following day."

Grace
received an initial payment.
"Since receiving the first transfer, I have noticed many changes in my daily life and developed a good plan aimed at improving our standard of living. The start of the plan to build a new shop is the biggest difference in my daily life because it marks the beginning of a new source of income. I had no money to spend on the construction, but I am hoping to finish it soon once I receive the transfers that we were promised during enrollment."

Boaz
received a $162 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is the hope I have for my family's food security and a source of income from surplus farm produce sales. Spending $100 on farm inputs and land preparation has resulted in improved growth, so I am optimistic about a better harvest at the end of the season."

Kache
received a $444 initial payment.
"Since I had no defined source of income apart from burning charcoals, I opted to buy a motorbike for business. The motorbike is used for ferrying people from one destination to the other. In purchasing the motorbike, I bought it in hire-purchase because the amount could not allow me to buy it in cash. Therefore, I paid a deposit of $200 and I am paying a weekly installment of $5 for two years. I am very happy that I now have an income-generating activity. Thereafter, I bought two chairs for $85 since I did not have any chairs at my house. For the remaining amount, I opted to use it in buying some food since that was the main challenge I was passing through."

Dama
received a $28 tenth payment.
"Being jobless, I intend to start a small business vending dry fish and tomatoes around the village. This will be a reliable source of income for myself and my family. Currently, I am not working after giving birth to my second-born last month. In addition, I planning to boost the livestock rearing that I started with the transfer by purchasing more goats. This will be my future investment for the children's education. As of now, my firstborn is in grade 2 and is expected to join the junior secondary school in grade 6."
