What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have always wanted to construct a bigger house since our one-room apartment was getting too small for my family of six, which consists of my husband, four growing kids, and myself. When GiveDirectly came into the picture, I saw it as a golden opportunity to fulfil this dream. I used part of the second transfer to purchase some of the necessary materials. When I received the third transfer, I used the entire amount of $450 to acquire more materials like iron sheets, building nails, metal rods, and frames. Additionally, I paid for construction labor. I am delighted to share that the new house is now complete. It offers us much-needed space, featuring a sitting room to welcome visitors and our bedroom. This upgrade not only enhances our living conditions but also provides us with dignity and privacy, a luxury we didn't have while sharing one room with our growing teenagers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
From my perspective, GiveDirectly has truly excelled by providing substantial lump-sum transfers. This approach is exceptional, as I have never encountered any other organization offering such significant support. These transfers have empowered us to undertake substantial projects. For instance, in my personal experience, I was able to construct a better and more comfortable house for my family. I express my sincere gratitude to GiveDirectly for their impactful contributions.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the years to come, I am planning to venture into hawking second-hand clothes within my village. This opportunity holds great potential to boost my farming income since I have observed that numerous villagers travel to town to buy clothes when I can easily offer them within our community. The startup cost is also relatively low, around $100, which would enable me to purchase a selection of clothing items. This additional income will prove essential in supporting our efforts to provide for our children's secondary education.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The money I received from GiveDirectly has helped me in many ways for example I was able to build one bedroom which costed $200 since the space was not enough, now we have two bedrooms which can accommodate six of us .I was able also to buy requirements for my child who was joining secondary junior and spent the remaining amount on buying foodstuff for my family of six.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
They offer a helping hand to those in need without favour in return. They are unbiased. The informetion was clear from the start to the end since we were given clear information about the program.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My biggest goal in life is to have my own business so that I can get income and provide for my family and not to depend on anybody even givedirectly.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used $80 of my first transfer to lease a plot of land that is currently under beans plantation. We have a small family farm that is insufficient for both cultivation and livestock farming because we have goats to raise. I rolled a $50 and later harrowed the land. I was fortunate to receive certified bean seeds from a charity organization that distributes seeds only to farmers who have a plot of land to grow them on. Furthermore, I spent $20 on labor during planting and am looking forward to weeding them when I receive the second transfer. The seed company's education, which has so far been visited twice since we planted, has been beneficial, and I am hopeful that I will have a better harvest at the end of the season. I also purchased other farm inputs, such as pesticides, and set aside $20 for subsequent management practices. I spent the remaining $3 on food for my family of six, which we ate for a month before running out.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I had nothing to invest in the farm, and even though there was seed support from well-wishers, I could not get it because I did not have a plot to plant before GiveDirectly came along. I am grateful for the help that has made the greatest difference in my daily life since leasing and planting the land. As I closely monitor the healthy growth of my crops, I am encouraged. I am currently planning to begin weeding on my own because I have exhausted the first transfer and am unsure of the exact dates for receiving the second transfer.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At around 4:00 p.m., I was at home when I received a message from GiveDirectly. I was surprised because the name "GiveDirectly" was not mentioned anywhere in the message. I was able to confirm with a friend who had also received the same amount after asking around. I could not doubt any longer because it was the only money I was expecting, but I did inform my family before agreeing on spending.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When I gave birth to my son Ryan 7 years ago, l thought he could be like any other child. Ryan is able differently. His development milestone was very slow compared to other kids his age. At the age of 6months, he was not able to sit or crawl like other children. This prompted me to take him to physiotherapy in Nairobi which was for free. I was glad that there were some noticeable changes which brought hope. However, due to a lack of finances, I have not been able to take him to continuous therapies and sadly he has not changed a bit. Due to this condition, I cannot leave him alone thus I depend fully on my husband, Peter, who is a casual labourer to raise my family of 6. The meagre pay of KES 2000 monthly is insufficient to cater for the family's needs such as education, clothing, medication and food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Although my family of 6 struggles financially, I am glad that we have never lacked what to eat. Young children still need some nutrient for their development and milk is a constituent. I was excited when my father gave me a dairy cow to provide milk for my children. Luckily, I have spent not a pound on purchasing milk, which saves a lot for other household use. The KES 2000 my husband Peter, earns from casual jobs monthly has been used towards education for my 2 children in school.
What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
When war broke out in Arabal in 2011, my husband relocated to the village in search of peace. He used to rent houses not until I met him in 2018 when we moved to the land we borrowed from a relative. Although we constructed a house, we are not settled fully because we do not know when the owner will repossess it. So when I get the transfers, I intend on opening a boutique with KES 100000 to support my family of 6. I will save up the profit accumulated to purchase my land. I will be excited that my family will be able to settle without fear of eviction as well as earn some income and hence be financially stable. Furthermore, I will be able to take my disabled son, 7, for physiotherapy.
