"The transfers came as a blessing to our family. We were going through a tough season where the cost of living had gone up and threatened our existence. We never had milk for household consumption and so the idea of purchasing a dairy cow had crossed our minds only that we didn't have the means. GiveDirectly transfers were a big enabler, we used the money to purchase a dairy cow. We were in dire need to have a cow for milk production and for posterity so that we could remember GiveDirectly with it in the future. We purchased a cow worth KES 30000 and the rest of the money to buy clothing."

"I am old and feeble and my health is deteriorating I am not able to go fetch water from the river which is a bit far. There is a river called chepkulo which we use but they are unclean and unsafe for human consumption. I used KES 36000 of the transfers to purchase a water tank and I used the rest to buy foodstuff. I am so happy that the water problem is a thing of the past at the moment and I am having an easy time unlike before."

"We have a small piece of land, and to be able to produce enough for our family, we have to rent from others, and we don't get manure because we don't own any livestock. We have to do casual labour to raise money to buy inorganic fertiliser, which is expensive, and we are not able to get as much as we need. We don't have access to capital to start a business, we approached Sacco ( Saving and Credit Cooperative) to ask for a loan but we failed to provide a mortgage because we didn't have a land at that time thus we didn't get the money we wanted."

In the near future, I will be expanding and mostly the deliveries will be done by the motorcyclist as they will be in large quantities. "Before the transfers, I never had cows before as I had no stable source of income. I used the transfers to buy female cows for kshs 35,000. This is for milk production for my family's consumption and sale. I do casual work to earn a living and most of the time the pay is too little to cater for my basic needs, I do top it up with the money from selling milk and this has enabled me to take care of other basic needs like food, clothing and kids school fees. I used the remaining part of the transfers of kshs 20,000 to buy a piece of three-seater furniture. I used to fear hosting friends and relatives as I never had enough seats for them, but my self-esteem has improved since I started receiving transfers from GiveDirectly"
