Joseph
received a $421 second payment.
"I am passionate about doing business and I usually engage myself in shop-keeping business. The premise I was using in the past was rented and it was expensive. Previously, I had purchased a plot but lacked the funds to develop it. When I received the cash transfers from GiveDirectly I decided to construct a structure to serve as my shop. I used KES 40000 for its construction. As we speak the business is up and running and I am so elated about it. I used some of the money to add onto my stock. It is a source of livelihood and it has brought a lot of impact on our lives."

Kitsao
received a $436 second payment.
"I decided to invest in livestock keeping when I withdrew the money from the second transfer. I went along this path because it does not disappoint. After all, livestock does procreate, and if necessary, they may be traded for money. Thus, I spent $420 to purchase ten galla goats.
This gives me confidence that I will soon have a sizable flock and that it will help me to support my family. Because of the harsh climate in our area, I preferred goats to cows. Goats can endure. After that, I bought meals for my family using the remaining money."

Nzingo
received a $436 second payment.
"My current objective is to launch a dry-fish sales business. Since there are only a few people in my area, there is less competition, which is why I picked it. Due to the lack of trees in our area, my son's business of producing and selling charcoal has become unreliable, so the goal of this enterprise is to generate cash. I want to reach this objective as soon as I have some money."

"The greatest challenge I have faced was when I planted my crops at the top of the hill last year and due to the heavy rains from October, they were carried away. This greatly affected me on planting more crops there as I am an old lady I feel like a burden to my children who send me money to support myself."

Esther
received a $28 sixth payment.
"My goal currently is to save the monthly transfers in a Sacco, get a loan in the future, and start a hairdressing and beauty shop. I have been employed by a neighbour with a meagre income, and I want to start my own shop and be self-employed. I believe I will be able to pay for my son's fees with ease once I start my own business."

Herbert
received a $28 tenth payment.
"My objective is to invest in goats since they are the only assets that I can have. I am not employed, and these goats can help me overcome my financial troubles. I have nine children currently enrolled in high school and primary school, and they all depend on me for their fees. I do not have any other support besides the monthly transfers. I am currently keeping twelve goats, and I am planning to buy more goats in the coming year and beyond. They will serve as security for the future of my children's education."

Stanley
received a $421 second payment.
"I can not hide my happiness after my son completed his undergraduate education last year. Things were tough on me but GiveDirectly's transfers were a game-changer. Upon receiving my second transfer I spared KES 33000 and paid school fees. This brought back my long-lost sleep after years of stressing about where to fetch school fees for my child. Our main house also stalled since our little family income went to food for the family. After clearing school fees arrears I prioritized completing our house with the remaining money."
