Rachal

"I expect my life to change over the next six months in that we shall have already bought the oxen that we are planning to buy and possibly start advanced farming. We expect to be able to put more land under agriculture and at a lower cost. This will definitely mean that we have more income from our farms and we can meet the family's expenses without any difficulty."

"I expect my life to change in the next six months in that I will be owning three goats. I will use my subsequent transfers to achieve this. Charity
received a $49 eighth payment.
"A few months after I started receiving these transfers, I decided to quit my previous domestic jobs I did for a living and started a firewood business. The business is doing so great but I still want to expand it, therefore most of my transfers are still used to bring in more stock. This month, most of the money I received was used to buy more firewood stock and the remaining amount spent on foodstuff and other household needs."

Kabibi
received a $539 initial payment.
"I received message alerts on my phone early in the morning and on checking to confirm who the sender was, I realized that it was from GiveDirectly. It was informing me that I had received my first transfer into my Mpesa account. I could not contain the joy that instantly filled my heart. I celebrated with my family as we gave thanks to God and to GiveDirectly for the money."

Judy
received a $49 eighth payment.
"After completing high school a few years ago, I was unable to further my studies due to low income from my parents which forced me to stay home. With too much time on my hands, I hung around irresponsible and idle peers which led to my having a baby in my teenage years. This made it even worse as my parent was very mad and disappointed and cancelled every little plan she ever had of furthering my education. I had to accept my fate and even considered marriage a number of times but, thankfully, GD came to my rescue and gave me an opportunity to take a course in catering which I know will earn me a decent living and enough money to support my family. I would not have been able to take the course if it were not for GD because I am sure my mother would not have paid for the course owing to her little income."

Amina
received a $49 eighth payment.
"My sister had been very sick for the past four months, so I had to quit my business to attend to her while she was admitted to the hospital. This made it so hard for me to cater for her medical bills because I had no source of income and I was forced to take a huge loan from a friend which I have been repaying using part of my monthly transfers. I also paid the rest of the money that I received to a group we had formed when we began receiving these transfers with the aim of pooling funds together since we intend to buy a plot which we can later develop or subdivide among ourselves."
