"The biggest difference in my life is that I am relaxed, happy and feeling good because I have my own money. I managed to settled the debt that I had and I now have household items(utensils, bed sheets) which I bought with the GiveDirectly transfers. Before I got the transfers, I had pressure from the money lender and there was no peace at all."

Margaret
received a $530 second payment.
"I bought a piece of land two years ago with the aim of putting up a rental house on it. I had planned to take a loan to help finance the building. Unfortunately, when I applied for the loan, it was not approved. I did not have any other plan for how to get the money to put up the house. I was stranded and left the land unattended to. At some point last year, I had to look for money to fence it to avoid land grabbing cases from my villagers. Someone would have easily taken advantage of it because it was left fallow. When I heard the news of GD giving us the transfers, I was happy because I knew I would be able to finally put up the house I have been looking forward to. In as much as I have not been able to finish it, I am glad the step I made is significant and now I the loan I can get can enable me to finish building."

Lillian
received a $512 second payment.
"Having an iron-roofed house is a miracle for me. I have been living in a grass thatched house for the last three years. This is because I did not have the resources to buy building materials for putting up an iron-roofed house. The little I used to get from my farm and casual work, I would use to meet our daily needs and any kind of emergency that would arise in the family. As a result, I knew I would not manage to build an iron-roofed house until I received my transfer from GD. I was able to use the money to buy an iron sheet, nails, and timber which I used in putting up an iron-roofed house. I live in the same kind of house just like my friends. This is my pride and I feel happy anytime I walk in and out of the house."

Ednah
received a $512 second payment.
"My children have always been sent home for fees arrears on a monthly basis. Anytime pupils were being sent home, my children knew they would be sent home. This is because I was not able to pay their balance in time. I did not have a stable source of income to help me pay in time. It was very shameful because I was the only one whose children were being sent home regularly. I am happy because GD has re-written this chapter of my life. Since the year began, my children have only ben sent home once for arrears because I used the transfers to clear their arrears. I do feel at peace when I see them leaving the house because I know they would not be sent home for arrears. Secondly, the struggles I used to go through to get water during the dry seasons are no more. This is because I used part of my first transfer to buy a water tank. During the rainy seasons, I harvest water which has been very helpful in the dry seasons. This is how GD transfers have changed my life"

Chepkirui
received a $511 second payment.
"As a peasant farmer, I have always struggled to make ends meet with my little income from farming. In most cases, I have had to go for casual work to meet some basic needs of the family. This has been very stressful and I feel frustrated in life. My life has never been the kind of life I want. We have been quarrelling with my husband on very petty issues as a result of the lack of money. When I used the transfer to solve most of my needs, I have realised peace of mind which I have never had before. We are happy as a family and we rarely quarrel as we used to before the transfers."

Fancy
received a $512 second payment.
"Ever since I received the transfers, I have realised so much peace in my life and with my family. In the past before the transfers, we used to have little quarrels in the family on very petty issues. I would disagree with my husband on many issues because life was very frustrating for us. There was nothing going on in our lives. When I received the transfers and used the money to handle most of urgent needs, there has been peace in the family. We agree even on the things we used to argue on in the past. We rarely quarrel and I enjoy the company of my family more."
