"Receiving this money means that I will finally buy materials to fence my one acre piece of land.In a village set up where there are crop farms,it is very easy for livestock to cause conflict among neighbours.I personally keep goats and a cow and I would not want this to happen to me.In my old age too,I cannot keep up with tending to my livestock and I prefer that they are enclosed in a portion of my land.Having done this,I will also buy a few chairs for my house and food to feed my family."

"Receiving this money mean I will be able to live a comfortable and healthy life. I live in a grass thatched house and tapping rain water is impossible yet we experience prolonged period of drought. Currently, I am buying clean water for domestic use which costs Ksh 10 daily which is costly yet I walk for approximately 1 kilometer to get it from a different village. My intention is to build an iron sheet roofed house of approximately Ksh 30,000 and water tank of approximately Ksh 15,000. I will be able to get clean water during rainy season and thus improving my health as well."

"Receiving this money will mean so much to me. I have a plan to construct a better house that befits an old woman like myself. The house that I currently live in is made of timber with gaps on the walls thus making it extremely cold at night. This is against the doctor's advice that I sleep in a warm place. If I get lucky enough to be enrolled in the GiveDirectly program, I will renovate my current house to make it warm enough for someone like myself. Filling the gaps on the walls and also having the ceiling boards fixed will cost me about 30000 shillings."

"My desire for the last five years has been to venture into dairy farming. At the moment, I buy 2liters of milk every other morning for my young daughter for 40 shillings a liter. This translates to 2400 shillings every other month. I plan to buy a dairy cow for 30000 shillings. From it, I expect to get 5liters of milk every morning. I will reserve 1 liter for domestic use and sell the rest in our local market for 40 shillings a liter. This will be a good additional source of income for my family."

"I have always desired to venture into dairy farming. I feel that it will be an additional source of income for my family. I am planning to buy a dairy cow worth 40000 shillings. This will save me the cost of buying milk every other morning. I have a family of 5 young children and every day I spend 120 shillings buying them milk. If I get my cow, I will be able to milk at least 7 liters each day. I will sell 4 liters in a nearby market for 40 shillings a liter and leave the rest for domestic use. This will earn me 160 shillings which will go to my savings."

"Getting water for domestic use is a real challenge in this area. My wife walks for 5 km to and fro just to get a 20-liter Jerry can of water from a nearby water point. The most depressing bit is that she carries the same on her back making her so exhausted at the end of the day considering that she has to go for it 3-4 times daily. That means she spends the entire day fetching water instead of engaging in much more productive activities. The only thing I can do is to sympathize with her because I can not afford to buy a water tank to store this precious commodity. All this is brought about by prolonged seasons of drought that hit this region."

"Having a stable source of income has been my biggest hardship. I have tried several means but all have not worked out. The recent one is when I took a loan last year(2019) to buy a motor cycle taxi. I suffered a bad accident that forced me to be admitted for three weeks. I broke my leg and I have been on crutches for 11 months. I have not been able to start working normally. I am still limping. I was unable to service the loan and my motorcycle taxi was taken away from me by the lending institution. This has been a major set back financially."
