"My passed life had not been a good one. I been so sickly living in this house alone. The coming of GiveDirectly to do cash transfer to help poor people like us unconditionally is a great blessing for us because we are eaten up by poverty. Since I started to receive this cash transfer from GiveDirectly, I have began to see happiness and feel joy in my heart. With this money, the biggest difference in my life is that I am going to see myself healthy and live under a better roof in my remaining old age."

"I was at school, I had taken back my children who had been sent home due to school fees arrears. I heard a message ringtone on my phone and I pulled it out of my pocket wondering what it was all about. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the SMS which was indicating that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was so happy to learn the good news and I thanked God because it was like a prayer answered. I immediately used some to pay for my children's school fees because I didn't have any to give out."

"My main challenges now is having money to send my children to school. I was not successful in entering school which have me in this condition, now I don't want my children to be in such situation. * The next thing is about having my own house. I continue to live in my uncle house where at anytime I can be removed. Without a house, it's possible that tomorrow my family and I find ourselves in the street."

"I've been longing to buy a piece of land to build my house and also start a new business(fish sale) in Cestos. In doing so, I would have another source of income to take care of me and my family basic needs. I couldn't have achieved both of my goals initially because upon receiving my first transfer from GiveDirectly, my primary objective was to renovate my old and depleted house. I used most of my first transfer to buy zinc and change the old thatch on my house. However, with this second transfer, I can purchase one lot of land and established a new business (fish sale) which is my ultimate goal at the moment."

"My house is in a deplorable condition and needs to be renovated urgently. I'm also struggling to take care of my grand children but due to very low income, I'm unable to cater to their daily needs. Suddenly, while I was at home during the morning hours, I received my transfer from GiveDirectly. I was very pleased at that moment. I knew this transfer would financially equipped me to take care of my grand children. I knew this transfer would help me pay their school fees and I could use portion of the money to fix my house. I feel so amazed!"

"I had been living in a mud-walled house with my family of six that was hard to maintain as I had to keep filling the crevices that would otherwise have let insects and cold breezes on the rainy seasons. The roof was already old also and could not have lasted much longer if I had not received the transfer. I was glad to confirm the receipt as we had been planning to initiate the construction of a better house with wooden walls and new iron sheets. By the time I received this transfer, we had already obtained some iron sheets meant for the new house and had to top up to a total of 44 iron sheets enough for the plan we had drawn. I also had to buy trees to cut into timber, purchase nails, spend some on settling the labor charges during transportation, and finally initiate the construction that is currently at its advanced stages. Even though the first transfer could not complete the construction work, I am glad that we are currently working on the interior and hoping that a small part of the second transfer will facilitate the completion and painting of the walls. I am grateful to this far and hope that we will soon be moving into the new house so that we can demolish the old structure that we had been living in."

"With my family of three, I had been working so hard alongside my spouse to ensure that we don't miss our daily bread. Even though we had been trying several businesses that I am grateful for for the far they have provided us with other household needs that have been hard to consistently provide. We could forego some at some point but buying milk had been so hard to skip as we now have a young kid who needs milk every day. Buying from the neighborhood had been so expensive that we decided to buy a heifer some months ago and a Bullock to rear alongside. The two could not bring an instant solution, and we had to keep buying until the last month when we received the first transfer and purchased a lactating cow at KES35000. I am happy that we now have enough milk not only for the baby but also for us to use in making our daily breakfast. We had been running a business in the nearby shopping center that is a combination of a Cybercafe, retail shop, and also a Mpesa shop in it. The three have been doing well even though we had to borrow a loan three months ago. I had been paying back in bits, and the arrival of this transfer enabled me to clear the remaining KES15000. With the remaining KES4000, we settled the school arrears we had with my wife in our former schools to obtain our certificates. We are happy that we are now free to take a step towards furthering our studies since the certificates we had been hoping to obtain are finally with us."

"The complete construction of a house that has been at a halt for a very long time is the biggest difference in my daily life. It has been a great challenge to my family since we never had a reliable source of income and all the plans we have always put in place never worked since other bills would always push us to spend the savings in place. I am thankful to GiveDirectly for the great support that enabled us to obtain all the materials we had been missing and finally pay the labor charges after the complete furnishing of all the floors and the walls."
