"One of the challenges I am currently facing is food insecurity. With a family of six and an average of KES.300 per day, we have not been able to buy all the necessities needed at the time. We sometimes skip some meals when we don't have enough foodstuffs. This is one thing that does not go down well with me. I feel bad when I can not give my children proper meals in a day."

"The anticipation of receiving unconditional financial aid made me so happy when GiveDirectly officers came for enrollment. I was the happiest person the day I saw the Mpesa message and after checking my account balance to verify that it was indeed true. I remember very well that I was at home fencing my farm and received this news and I immediately informed my family who were equally overjoyed on knowing that our lives would soon transform for the better."

"Receiving this money will help me ease school fees burden. My first born daughter is in secondary school and her other four siblings are in primary school. I have pending KES 40000 to clear their fee arrears and so this money has come in handy to enable me clear the amount. I will then save the remaining KES 60000, since my second born daughter will be joining high school next year, hence this will be her first year's school fees."

"Receiving this money means buying two acres of land. I have a family of five children. I was born and raised in my grandmother's home. I have lived there all my life until I married my wife. However, due to our african tradition, it is a taboo to be raised and live in your grandmother's home with your wife and children. This forced me to borrow a piece of land from a good friend of mine and he gave me a small piece of land to live there temporarily. I have been living here for the last two years. However, I cannot do anything in this land because I only have access to it but have no control over it. I depend on casual jobs in construction sites to get money for my family. However, these jobs are not reliable and pay very little amount of money. I get at most 3000 KES a month which is not enough to save and meet the basic needs of my family. My ambition has been to own my own piece of land where I can cultivate and get food for my family. Upon receiving the cash transfer, I will buy two acres of land that will cost 60000 KES. I will then use the remaining amount of money to pay school fees for my children."

"The thing that I can say took a huge portion of my transfer was the education for my children in which the eight that are still in primary school took KES15000 in settling part of their school fees arrears whereas the other one had completed high school needed KES10000 in arrears as well. I did this because I believe in education, especially for the son who completed high school, and is a source of future employment and it is something I can count on for assistance in the future. Also, for his younger siblings, he is a good example and a source of motivation. This makes me so happy and hopeful."
