"With old age, a balanced diet and nutritious food are what we need. But it is difficult being old and unable to do jobs to earn pay at the same time living in a semi-arid area where land is not productive. Food insecurity is a challenge since our farms do not yield enough food due to poor climatic conditions. Sometimes we forego three to one meal a day which is not good for our health."

"Upon completion of the original goal I had at the time of enrollment, I developed a new goal of supporting my children's education. I have begun saving part of my transfers and other income with an intention to use them to pay off my children's school fees. Through this, my two children in secondary school will be able to succeed in their academic pursuit. Paying their fees on time will help them to have ample time in school and this could register an improvement in their performance. I am hopeful that when they succeed, they will be of help to their younger siblings in primary school."

"I have desired to have a stable source of income for my family of 5 members. This dream has never come past due to financial constraints. I am a class 6 dropout and this has ended me in the charcoal burning job something that makes me regret. I am planning to spend KES 60,000 to invest in a business ( shop). This will generate income for us and also will act as a breakthrough for my health because charcoal burning is tiresome. Also, I will invest the remaining amount in the livestock which will be an additional source of income."

"The challenge that I am currently facing is financial constraints brought about by the unavailable source of income. I am elderly with a chest condition that limits me and this means that I cannot do heavier jobs and I have to rely so much on my children to provide for me. This is difficult for them considering that they have families to take care of and they do not have stable sources of income."

"I and my husband have an income of KES 5000 after earnings from his shop and sell of charcoal. The proceeds are not sufficient for a family of 6 six members. In a day I need KES 400 to adequately meet all necessities in my household. Due to this, it is very difficult to ensure my children live a decent life, hence irregular income remains to be the major challenge that I am currently facing. Sometimes, they go to school hungry due to a lack of money to buy food. A situation that has affected their school performance."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a great job for my entire region by ensuring that we all received our cash transfers timely. Also after collecting the money, the officers made a follow-up to confirm whether the money was well received. This was so good of them and it showed how much they care about us."

"My husband is very old and can longer fend for the family. I resorted to charcoal burning business to salvage the situation at home. I earn approximately 1500 KES a week which is barely enough for the household foodstuff needs. Then nature of work is also tiresome because for are forced to digging tree stumps. This is as a result of drought which has brought about the shortage of trees."

"My father is a strict man and he has restricted me from building a house in a place of my choice within our compound. He has consistently told me to buy my own land so that I can be free to do whatever I wish. I once defied his order and I got a punch on my face and that is why my number one desire is to have a 0.2-acre piece of land where I will settle. I am a motorbike taxi rider and the much I can earn on a good day is KES 300. This is spent on buying food such as milk, vegetables, and maize flour. I intend to spend KES 80000 to buy a piece of land within this village. Receiving this money will mean a lot to me as it will make me buy land where I will settle and get the much-needed peace of mind."
