How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Purchasing a parcel of land has been the greatest achievement that I was able to attain in a short period. Therefore, I don't have a new goal at the moment other than to be grateful and happy for the milestone I have achieved.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has empowered us financially. This is because we were able to achieve this that we thought were unachievable due to financial constraints. We are forever indebted for the support that lifted our living standards. GiveDirectly does its duties diligently. thus, I have not witnessed anything that was not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
To avoid frequent family conflicts due to land disputes with my family members, the desire and the will of owning a parcel of land was my goal. Though, it was not easy to realise this goal due to financial constraints. When we were promised the unconditional transfer, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to realise this dream. Therefore, I used both of my transfers on purchasing a parcel of land. Indeed the support from GiveDirectly was God-sent and words can't explain or express my innermost gratitude to the organization, thus I am forever grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 6:30 AM when I heard a message notification on my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and I inform my spouse and we all celebrated the amazing news. I knew I would be able to top up with my savings and purchase a piece of land from my neighbor who was selling. I withdrew the money the following and plan with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Purchasing a piece of land is the biggest difference in my daily life. I had always wished to purchase land because our parents would restrict us from using their farm. I depend on casual jobs and this earns me some money to meet household needs and other expenses. I would save this money on the merry-go-round groups that we have started in our village. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because I knew I would be able to buy land. Currently, I own land and I wish to start a diary-keeping project. I will plan the Napier grass on land and do zero grazing. This will earn me an income by selling milk and at the same time, my family would get enough milk and cut the daily cost of buying milk. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has improved our standard of living.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 to top up with my saving to purchase a piece of land from my neighbor. I am so happy because currently, I have started horticulture on the farm. I spend KES 15,000 on competing for the construction of the house that I had started building. The house is now decent and whenever I have visitors I have space to host them. I spend KES 15,000 to pay college fees for my spouse who is still studying. She was able to sit for the examination and this gave me peace of mind since I did not know where to get the fees, GiveDirectly has improved our standard of living.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My father is a strict man and he has restricted me from building a house in a place of my choice within our compound. He has consistently told me to buy my own land so that I can be free to do whatever I wish. I once defied his order and I got a punch on my face and that is why my number one desire is to have a 0.2-acre piece of land where I will settle. I am a motorbike taxi rider and the much I can earn on a good day is KES 300. This is spent on buying food such as milk, vegetables, and maize flour. I intend to spend KES 80000 to buy a piece of land within this village. Receiving this money will mean a lot to me as it will make me buy land where I will settle and get the much-needed peace of mind.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My wife studies in a college in Nakuru and when she heard about the passing of my mother, she came home to grief with the rest of the family. Her coming meant so much to me and I am happy that she abandoned everything that she was doing and joined the rest of us.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Three days ago I lost my biological mother and I have not recovered from the shock. She complained of a slight headache and went to a nearby health center where she was given some drugs. When she got home her condition worsened and as we were still trying to get means of taking her to a better hospital she passed on. I loved my mother and for now I feel lonely and preoccupied by thoughts of how life would be without her. All I need now is emotional support to help me grieve the loss of someone important to me.
