"I used KES 32000 of the second transfer to purchase building materials (iron sheets, nails, and timber) which I will use to construct a three-roomed house. My current single room is too small to fit my family of five. I have three children and it is not comfortable sharing a sleeping room with them. Therefore, after constructing the new house, they will use the current house as their sleeping room. I cannot wait to own a bigger house so that we can have our privacy. KES 10000 I spent on boosting my business by stocking new products. Initially I concentrated on foodstuffs and personal care products but later discovered that utensils are not only in high demand but also more profitable. I still have KES 7000 which I have saved for building labor and spent KES on my children's school fees so that I could clear the fee balance they owed the school. I am glad my children currently have ample time with their studies since they are no longer sent back home for school fees."

"I walk long distances like 1 hour walk to and from to get 1 jerricans of water, which costs 10 KSH, and a day we need like 10 jerricans for washing, cooking, and drinking. So everyday we need to have 100 KSH, which is not possible because nobody is employed and we depend on charcoal burning Business, which at the moment the business is not picking at all. My husband also is a trained carpenter, but is not fully employed because of lack of opportunities, so it's a challenge for him to provide basic needs of the family."

"I have been living in this house for over 20 years, In the early years it had a big a better semipermanent home, because those days it wasn't easy to get an iron roofed house and I was proud of my house. At the moment it's worn out and it's the opposite of the past, our neighbors have better housing. My roof is leaking in some corners, the walls they are infested with ants who hide in mud, and because it has no windows I can say there isn't good ventilation. Upon receiving the first transfer of 55,000 KSH, I plan to remodel it to a modern house, I plan to plaster it, and make cemented floor. I also plan to construct 3 windows for lighting and aeration purposes. The total cost will cost the whole of transfer and it won't be enough, so I have my few savings that will add up and complete the project."

"I spent part of my second transfer on adding stock to my charcoal business which cost around KES 10000. It was almost collapsing because I have been utilizing the capital plus the little profits to clear my bills. I was worried since it was the only source of income that I had relied on. The fact that I managed to revive it has brought a positive impact on my household. I no longer struggle when meeting the family's basic needs like before. I also bought a motorbike worthy KES 45000. This has created a job opportunity for my spouse who has been jobless for years. Raising six children was so tough by then. I am so happy and grateful to GiveDirectly because all has been well from the day they came into our lives."

"My son who completed his high school education three years ago could not join college because currently I do not have any reliable source of income as my husband who was the bread winner working as an administration police retired 15 years ago. Since then we have been through hard times even sometimes affording a meal a day becomes a problem. Upon receiving this transfer from GiveDirectly would mean I take my son to college where he would pursue a mechanical course. I am hopeful that when he graduates he will secure a job and provide for our family with basic needs such as food. I will spend 25000 KES on his education. I will also spend 15000 KES on renovating my house and the rest of the money will be spent on buying food and paying school fees for my child."
