"Receiving this money means no more using contaminated water from the open water pans which we normally share with livestock since i plan to buy two 5000 litre water tanks for harvesting clean water during rainy seasons. I will then use the remaining part of my transfer to buy a dairy cow for milking hence no more buying milk for family consumption as well as an additional income to me now that i will be selling some milk to earn some income."

received a $526 second payment.
"I had been a business man for long but I had never received such an amount of money before. I am happy for the support that GiveDirectly has given me. My wife and I are growing and less energetic for active daily chores. The biggest difference in my daily is the efforts that GiveDirectly has given me to buy a water tank at my age. I currently enjoy clean water my doorstep and we are relaxed no hardwork for aging wife to go fetch water. I feel so proud and GiveDirectly for the financial support."

Samuel
received a $471 initial payment.
"I have owned 2 cows that I plan to pay as dowry for my wife to be. In addition, I was in position to acquire fertilizers and pesticide for my watermelon farm that resulted to a good harvest. After selling my watermelon I was able to get UGX 1,600,000 which I spent to buy another cow, dig and build a pin latrine for my family. Had I not received money from GiveDirectly, I wouldn't have managed to maintain my watermelon farm."

Christine
received a $471 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that, I have owned a bicycle that has eased my movements. I can now take a shorter time to move to the hospital with my children and it also helps me in fetching water. Further more, I have bought most of the construction materials for an iron roofed house. I am planning to start the construction work after getting my second transfer. Previously, I moved long distances to fetch water and to take my children to the hospital that often took a lot of time."

Nelly
received a $525 second payment.
"I spent my second transfer on constructing a kitchen. I used to cook in an open area since I didn't have the means of constructing one. This made it difficult for me to cook during rainy seasons. I also bought a few clothes for myself and my family members. I further went ahead and bought the beddings. Apart from that, I also bought a water tank to collect rainwater after installing iron sheets on the roof of my house. Last but not least, I paid school fees for my son who was joining secondary school. He had a good start and is going on well with school. I am glad and feel very proud of the home improvements too."

"Lack of a reliable source of income that can support the needs of my family has been my biggest hardship. I purely depend on my husband who is doing water vending job at Mombasa but his income can not fully sustain our needs. I am happy to learn that soon, I will be owning a job that will supplement his income once I receive the cash grant from GiveDirectly."

"My day starts early in the morning after my 2 school going children have left for school by going to work (watering, digging, weeding and planting more crops) in my garden (0.2 of an acre) where I planted kales, sugarcane and potatoes. This will take me up to around 1 pm and then use the rest of my afternoon doing other household duties. It is only in the evening I feel happy since it is the only time I am free and relax with the rest of the family as we chat on how the day was."

Anderson
received a $525 second payment.
"If it were to construct my house, it could have taken century to accomplish this dream .This is because the manual jobs around the village which is my income can barely sustain my family's needs. Therefore, I had to keep on staying in this old leaky grass thatched house which when it rained my family and I had to stand at on point of the house with some of the properties that seemed precious to us to avoid them getting soaked with cold water. At the moment, I have bought the required building materials with GiveDirectly's transfer and the construction has commenced . The biggest gift I have received is being able to provide for my family members mostly my children a decent shelter through GiveDirectrly's finances ."

Kiplangat
received a $252 second payment.
"I was able to build a kitchen. I no longer worry now about leaking roofs and cold. Without the transfers, I wouldn't have built a new kitchen!. We used to stay in a mud-walled and flour and grass-thatched house that used to be so terrible and leaky during the rainy season. In fact, the floor of the house would sometime be filled by water sipping from the ground due to too much rain."
