"My life is very different in that I managed to renovate the roof of my house which was grass thatched, leaky and old with an iron sheet one. I have stress free nights unlike before when I used to beg for sleeping spaces in other people's houses during rainy seasons. Sometimes, we could be forced to converge at a corner with my husband and children since almost every part of the roof was leaky. This even exposed us to cold related diseases like pneumonia that made us weak and unable to execute our daily chores with vigour. I paid school fees for my three children who are in both secondary level and vocational training institution. Education is the best inheritance I could give to them and I hope that they could lead a better life that mine. I used the remaining part of the transfer to invest in sugarcane farming which gives me hope for the future. I believe to harvest in the next two years and save for the advancement of my children education to university level. Thanks to GiveDirectly transfers that came handy at real time of need."

"My life is very different in that I managed to clear fees arrears for my brother who is in secondary level. He was known as a person who could drop out of school anytime as poverty was obvious and the order of the day. He was almost losing hope in education as he was being kicked out of class due to lack of school fees. This made him lose lessons and exams as well and really discouraging. For the first time, he was congratulated as one of the students with responsible parents to have cleared fees arrears in advance. I feel honoured as well of being a responsible brother and always gets encouraged when I see his improvements in academic performance. I am an investor and not a casual labor when it comes to sugarcane farming which is the main and rewarding economic activity in this region. The two hectares of sugarcane farm that I own give me hope for financial flow and economic empowerment for the better. Thanks to GiveDirectly transfers."

"My life is currently different from how it was in that, I was able to build a kitchen and also paid my school fees. I am glad that, I did not miss the final exams this year due to lack of school fees. Having a decent kitchen has also given me peace of mind because I do not have to share the place with the animals which are normally messy. I can comfortably store my food without being contaminated."

"In the next six months, My life will have changed in that I will have bought a parcel of land. I plan to do this by taking a loan and top it up using the money I get as a farm caretaker. I work fo my brother who left his tea farm under my care and went o work in the city, The savings I have made from the salary he gives me will top up the loan that I will take. I will buy a piece of land where I can settle my family in. Being a single mother means so much pain and poverty but the empowerment from GiveDirectly is leading me out of the bondage. I will be having my own parcel of land in the next six months."

"In the next six months, my new goal is to start up a business of selling second-hand clothes. Second-hand clothes are easy to get and will go very fast as long as I target the right clients. From the business, I shall be able to generate some income which I shall use to pay school fees for my children. I always feel like a burden to my husband since I am jobless and depend on him on almost everything. But with this business I will be adding value to my home. I shall also be independent hence I shall not rely too much on my husband who is currently staying in Nairobi."

"My life is currently different than it was before in that I currently live in my own house where I am no longer afraid of rainfall. Previously, I was living in a small single-roomed house which was not only inadequate for my family but also leaky and uncomfortable to live in. Whenever there was a change in weather condition, I could send my children to my neighborhood in order to secure a better accommodation for them. This was hectic because I could help them wade over the mud, an experienced none of us loved. I thank God for GiveDirectly's financial support. I have now built a big house that can accommodate all of us"

"In the next six months, I expect to have a running shop which will supplement my household income. Since the demand in this village is high, I only need to learn some marketing skills to attract and satisfy my customers. With proper management skills, I will open several branches in different parts of the village. This will allow me to meet my daily needs as well as my long term goals. I will also ensure my kids finish school and become successful people in society."
