"Considering my current situation, I am a house wife and a mother of young twins. Our area is so dry that getting safe and clean water is a big challenge. I am forced to walk at least ten kilometers to get earth water. I consider lack of clean and safe water for household consumption as the biggest hardship I have ever faced."

"My ambition has been to live a decent life like other people who are considered well off in the village. One is regarded to have a standard life when he or she owns a spacious iron roofed house, having livestock and at least getting three meals in a day. Currently, I depend on my husband whose job is to make and sell charcoal. This job is very tiresome and not reliable at all. With all efforts he has, we have managed to own a small iron roofed house and also getting at most two meals in a day. Receiving this money will mean changing our life for the better. I shall start a shop within the village because as at today, there is no shop. We shall use the remaining amount to repair our house and also buy two dairy cows. The income from these investments will sustain our family needs and thus make our life decent."

"I expect in the next six months that I have saved enough to enroll in college. I believe through completing my course in college I will be able to get employed and assist my parent back at home and also be a mentor to other girls who have the goal of succeeding through education and the opt for early marriages due to lack of school fees."

"GiveDirectly has improved my way and standards of living in many different ways. Before I received these transfers, I had no dairy cow for the family and I spent a lot of money buying milk for household consumption. This has since stopped after I used my first transfer to buy a dairy cow. I have also been able to connect my home to the national grid of electricity and now we enjoy electricity like any other family in the village. This has even motivated my children to work extra harder following the installation of the same."

Maritha
received a second payment.
"Previously, I used to wake up so early to look for water in a communal borehole where there were specific times we could draw water. I am tilling my farm right now and I do not have to worry about where to get water before I go to the farm in the morning or after doing tedious farm work. I drilled a borehole in my compound using the transfer so I have a day to day supply of water in my home. Thanks to GiveDirectly, my life has changed tremendously."
