"I live in a small, grass thatched house together with my family. The house is so conjested that some of my children have to go and sleep in my nearby neighbour's house. The education of my kids has also been hampered by this situation since they don't have a place to do their homework. But thanks to GD cash transfer, I'll be able to construct a semi permanent house that will be spacious enough and hence able to accomodate all of us. This will as a result offer my kids ample space to undertake their curriculum activities, sleep well and some sort of privacy to us as parents."

"Currently, my life is different from how it was before Give Directly came into my life in that I am healthy and have peace of mind. Initially, I was always worried because I didn't have a reliable source of income to meet my daily needs. I do not have a job and getting casual jobs in our are is not easy but since I started receiving the transfers, I don't get worried much because I know that the monthly transfers will be sent at the end of the day. The transfer has really helped me in taking care of my child's needs and I feel happy being a responsible parent for the first time."

"My expectation in the next six months is to have a business premise. I finished my tailoring course recently and I believe that I am competitive enough and ready to face new challenging designs. My neighbors and a few friends know that I have a sewing machine and I sew different designs inside my house. I want to continue doing this but in a business premise where I can get more customers."

"It was very unfortunate that my husband and I did not carefully plan for our retirement and this has led to so much frustration. With no work to do and no source of income, I almost fell into depression until GiveDirectly knocked on our door and things changed. I plan to use my transfers to buy an indigenous breed of goats and build a shelter for them to prevent them from being affected by the cold. I also plan to pay fees for my daughter who is yet to complete her degree in Human resource management. "

"My husband is a car mechanic in Sotik town, about 50 kilometers away from our home. Our greatest ambition has been to live next to his business proximity. Therefore receiving this money will enable us purchase a 0.2 acre piece of land for efficiency and an effort to curtail extra costs spent on transport everyday. Thanks to GiveDirectly, our goal is in the offing now more than ever. "

Florence
received a $538 second payment.
"Being a widow who depended on casual jobs that earned me a meager income to raise my four children by myself was a struggle without any assistance from my in-laws who claimed to lack money whenever I asked for assistance. With all this, I didn't manage to give my children a quality education and the eldest among them decided to work in a nearby tailoring shop so as to sew for commissions. My life is now different because I have managed to purchase a sewing machine for my daughter. Today, she enjoys all the profits she gets from her tailoring business that she recently started. Therefore, she can comfortably chip in to assist in catering for our family's needs. I am so grateful because if it were not for the GiveDirectly to come to our village I would not have bought it anytime soon."

"Imagine living in a house where someone has tried to break into several times. This is because there are open spaces at the top part of the walls and the door is damaged. I fear for my security and this means I will have to repair it once I receive this transfer. I will also clear college fees for my daughter who is pursuing a tailoring course. Since she is almost winding up, i will purchase her a sewing machine and all other necessities required to start a dress making shop. This will enable her to take care of herself and also support me since I am unable to work properly due to a medical condition."

"Recieving this money means that I will be in position to get back part of my land which I had given out to someone for money the time my husband fell sick, we sold off almost everything for his treatment expenses but still he passed on.The remaining balance, I will use it to put up a small iron roofed house for myself."

"For the past three months, I have been sheltering under my son's house after mine collapsed. This is not only shameful but also a taboo in my community. I am not comfortable with it and I will therefore build a house with this transfer. Apart from this, my children's education is a priority and I have been struggling all along to see them through school. I desire to give them a better future since I am their only hope after the demise of my husband. To achieve this, I will purchase goats for rearing. This is because they are not prone to drought and they multiply faster, hence providing high returns within a short period."

Jumwa
received a $520 second payment.
"Having goats is the biggest difference and gift that I have received in my life. I settled on rearing goats because they reproduce twice a year and require little attention to rear compared to other domestic animals. Further more, their food is also easily available since they can live in any type of climate. I am optimistic they will multiply and increase in number. Therefore, I shall sell some in our local markets. Apart from that, I will exchange some for a dairy cow so that I can get milk and sell purposely to double my income. And according to me, these are the well-thoughtful assets that will help me in the near future. Thank you GiveDirectly for making an impact in my living standard at a time I almost lost hope."
