Jumwa
received a $532 initial payment.
"For a long time, I used to live in a small old and leaking house which was grass thatched. My children also had to seek for a sleeping place at my neighbor's house because my house was not spacious. I always wanted to change this situation by building a more comfortable house but my financial status would not allow me. The biggest difference in my daily life, therefore, is the fact that we now live in a spacious and comfortable house. I was able to do this using the financial support I received from Give Directly. I am glad that my children are healthy and even have extra space where they can study and do their homework without any disturbances."

"I spent part of my transfer to boost my tailoring business. I have been a tailor for close to ten years now. I made this decision of improving my tailoring business because it has always been my source of income and has always helped me in meeting most if not all of the households basic needs. Being the only source of livelihood that I had, it was at the verge of collapsing since I had used almost all the money that I had. I had started feeling the effects of not having this small business. I am glad that I was able to revive the business and I am looking forward to better days ahead, thanks to GiveDirectly. I also saved some of the remaining amount to gather for future emergencies and plans for me and my family while the rest was used to buy food and other basic household needs."

"Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy a dairy cow.We have one already and I have always thought that if we had two,we would be able to have a better income from the sale of milk. This will in turn help especially with paying school fees for our children. My spouse is a teacher and I do not have a job.Since our family is polygamous, the needs of both households are sometimes more than his salary can meet and so we depend mostly on farming especially dairy farming."

received a $193 initial payment.
"I spent part of my transfer on purchasing an egg trolley and popcorn cage. I had my own search and found out that I would make good profits out of this business considering that I stay near the road. Apart from that, many kids in this area also enjoy eating these snacks. I am planning to sell boiled eggs as well as popcorns. Previously, I used to sell water and collect garbage in the neighborhood in order to earn a living. The income was very little that was not enough to take care of all my basic needs. I am glad that I get money on a daily basis which has really helped me to take care of my needs easily. In addition to that, the money also came in handy in facilitating my transportation cost to a friend's funeral."

"The biggest hardship i have faced in my life is unreliable source of income. I do casual jobs such as weeding and planting other people's farms in order to earn some money to sustain my family. However, it is never predictable daily whether i will be able to get some work to do thus this is the biggest challenge i face"

"Receiving this money will enable me build a new two roomed house since the roof of the one we live in leaks whenever it rains. Buying a dairy calf and two goats is also part of my plans since this will act as savings in that i when my children reach secondary school, i will sell the goats which by then will have multiplied, hence i will be able to pay school fees with ease"

"I had enrolled for a driving course at a nearby institution. My parents were able to raise KES 6000 only but the amount that was needed was 17000 KES. I am glad because I was also able to clear the balance using the transfers which I received from Give Directly. I feel good because I will now be able to sit for the final exams mid this month. Some few months ago, I was operating a juice business and the business had collapsed because the blender became faulty and I was unable to repair it. I was able to start buying utensils and even thinking of buying a blender because reviving this business means a lot to me."

"The moment I received the transfer I was overjoyed and shocked at the same time because I thought that it was money sent to a wrong number. I had to calm myself and start planning on the things that I will spend the money on. To date, when I picture this day an involuntary smile forms on my face."
