"The biggest hardship I face in my household is that we do not have enough land in order to cultivate. The land that we had was leased out in order to pay bride price to my parents. In my culture, the man is expected to pay bride price to the girl's parents as a sign of appreciation. This has left us with limited land to cultivate hence we are realizing food shortages in our household. "

"The biggest hardship that I face in my life is limited income which has led to increased borrowing. I borrow money frequently from money lenders who charge me high interest rates. This has increased on borrowing and reduced on independence and resilience within the household."

"The biggest hardship that I am faced with is lack of food .
I stay with my grand parents who have never given me a portion of land that I can cultivate to get food.
I do casual labour just to be able to have atleast a meal in a day.
Life is not easy for me.
My mother left me here and she never supports me in any way."

"The biggest hardship that I am faced with is lack of money to buy land.
I have always wanted to buy land yet I never had the opportunity due to lack of finances.
I came back home from marriage but life I not as easy as I expected it to be.
The piece of land that is available for use is too small to accommodate the need. "

"Receiving tho money means I will be able to pay my children's school fees in time. When my children complete their education, they will get good paying jobs which will enable them to support us as well. Currently, we spend all that we earn from farming in children's education leaving the family very desperate."

Grace
received a $531 initial payment.
"I felt so happy the moment I received the money from GiveDirectly. It was very early in the morning when I heard the message from my phone and when I checked it I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money before. My spouse too was so happy when I shared the news with her. We knew we were finally going to be able to buy a dairy cow, something we had been hoping to achieve but without success for a long time."
